Human Design basics
What the system is, where it came from, and what it is not.
What is Human Design?
Human Design is a system of self-knowledge that maps how your energy operates, calculated from your birth date, time, and place. It produces the bodygraph: a chart showing your type, strategy, inner authority, profile, and definition. It synthesizes the I Ching, the chakra system, Kabbalah, and astronomical calculation into one mechanical framework, and it is practiced as an experiment you run on yourself rather than a belief system you adopt.
Who created Human Design?
Human Design was founded by Ra Uru Hu (Robert Alan Krakower), who transmitted the system in 1987 on the island of Ibiza and then spent the rest of his life teaching it until his death in 2011. Everything taught today descends from that transmission and from the body of teaching he left behind. Jovian Archive is the international rights holder of his work, and the International Human Design School (IHDS) is the school he established for professional training.
Is Human Design the same as astrology?
No. Human Design uses the same astronomical data as astrology — planetary positions at your moment of birth — but maps them onto a completely different structure: the 64 gates and 9 centers of the bodygraph. It also adds a second calculation roughly 88 days before birth, which astrology does not use. Astrology describes character, timing, and cycles. Human Design describes energy mechanics and how you are built to make decisions.
Is Human Design scientific?
Human Design is not a science and does not claim to be one. It is a logical, mechanical system with an internally consistent structure, and it asks to be tested empirically in your own life rather than believed. The honest framing is the one Ra Uru Hu himself used: do not believe any of it, run the experiment and see what happens over time. Anyone selling it to you as proven science is misrepresenting it.
Is Human Design a religion or a spiritual belief system?
No. Human Design is not a religion, requires no faith, and asks you to worship nothing. It is a mechanical description of how your energy works, and it is compatible with any religious tradition or with none. What it does ask is that you experiment with making decisions a specific way and observe the results honestly.
What is the bodygraph?
The bodygraph is the visual chart that Human Design produces: nine geometric centers, 64 gates, and 36 channels, with planetary activations shown in two columns. The black column is your Personality (your conscious mind, calculated at birth) and the red column is your Design (your body, calculated about 88 days before birth). What is colored in is consistent energy; what is left white is where you are open and take in the world around you.
How long does it take to learn Human Design?
Understanding your own type, strategy, and authority takes an afternoon. Living it takes years. The foundational deconditioning experiment is traditionally described as a seven-year process, because that is roughly how long it takes for the body to move out of conditioned patterns. Professional-level chart literacy — reading any chart, not just your own — typically takes two to four years of structured study through Guide and Analyst training.
Do I have to believe in Human Design for it to work?
No, and belief is actually the wrong posture. Human Design asks for experiment, not faith. The proposition is simple: make decisions according to your strategy and authority for a sustained period, and observe whether your life gets less resistant. If it does not, you have lost nothing. This is why authentic teaching in the Ra Uru Hu lineage keeps pointing students back to their own experience rather than to the teacher.
Your chart and birth data
Getting an accurate chart, and what to do when your birth data is imperfect.
Is the Human Design chart on this site really free?
Yes. The free Human Design chart at thehumandesignsystem.com/free-chart gives you the full bodygraph — type, strategy, authority, profile, definition, and every activated gate and channel — calculated with a professional-grade ephemeris. No account and no credit card are required. If you later want a written analysis of what the chart means, the personalized report is $37.
Do I need my exact birth time for a Human Design chart?
For full accuracy, yes. The Moon changes gates roughly every ten hours and several chart details shift minute to minute, so an exact recorded birth time produces the most reliable chart. Type is often stable across a few hours, so an approximate time still gives you something usable. If your time is uncertain, generate the chart with your best estimate and treat the finer details as provisional until the time is confirmed.
What if I do not know my birth time at all?
Start with your birth certificate — in many countries the recorded time is on the long-form certificate, or held by the hospital or civil registry. If no record exists, you can still generate a chart with an estimated time and work with what stays stable across the range. A professional analyst can help narrow the window by testing which variations match your lived experience, but be wary of anyone who promises a precise rectification with certainty.
Does my birth time need to be adjusted for time zones or daylight saving?
You should enter your local clock time exactly as it was recorded at your place of birth, and let the calculator handle the conversion. An accurate chart engine applies the historical time zone and daylight saving rules that were actually in force at that location on that date, which have changed many times worldwide. Do not pre-adjust your time yourself — that is one of the most common causes of a wrong chart.
Does a C-section or induced birth change my Human Design chart?
No. The chart is calculated from the moment of birth as it actually happened, regardless of how the birth was initiated. Human Design does not treat a scheduled or assisted birth as less valid than a spontaneous one. What matters mechanically is the recorded time of the first breath, because that is the moment the Personality calculation is taken.
Can I get a Human Design chart if I am adopted and do not know my birth details?
You can generate a chart with any birth data you do have, but without a reliable date, time, and place the result should be treated as an approximation rather than your design. Adoption records, original birth certificates, and hospital records are often obtainable as an adult through the issuing jurisdiction. If the data cannot be recovered, the honest position is that a definitive chart is not available, and no reputable analyst should tell you otherwise.
What does the free chart show that most free calculators do not?
The free chart on this site returns the complete bodygraph with all gate and channel activations in both the Personality and Design calculations, not just a type label. Many free calculators show you a type and a one-line strategy and stop there, or run on simplified ephemeris data that drifts. Accurate planetary calculation matters because a single degree of difference can change a gate, and a changed gate can change a channel, a center definition, and your authority.
Why do I get a different Human Design type on different websites?
Different results usually come from one of three causes: an incorrect time zone or daylight saving conversion, a low-quality ephemeris, or a site that calculates the Design side wrong. Type itself is determined by which centers are defined and how they connect to the Throat, so any error in a single gate can cascade into a different type. If two accurate calculators disagree, the birth data being entered is almost always the variable.
Type, Strategy, and Authority
The three mechanics you actually use day to day.
What are the five Human Design types?
There are five types: Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors. Type is determined by which centers in your bodygraph are defined and how they connect to the Throat, not by personality traits. Roughly speaking, Generators and Manifesting Generators are the energy types built to work, Manifestors are built to initiate, Projectors are built to guide, and Reflectors sample and mirror the health of their community.
What is Strategy in Human Design?
Strategy is the way your type is designed to engage with the world, and it is different for each type. Generators and Manifesting Generators respond to what shows up rather than initiating. Manifestors inform the people affected before they act. Projectors wait for recognition and invitation. Reflectors wait a full lunar cycle before major decisions. Strategy is about how you enter a situation, and it works alongside authority, which is how you decide.
What is Inner Authority?
Inner Authority is your body’s reliable decision-making mechanism, and it is not your mind. Depending on your chart it may be emotional, sacral, splenic, ego, self-projected, mental, or lunar. Authority answers the question of how you know something is correct for you: an emotional authority needs time for the wave to settle, a sacral authority feels a gut response in the moment, a splenic authority gets a single quiet knowing that does not repeat.
What is the difference between Strategy and Authority?
Strategy governs how you engage; Authority governs how you decide. Strategy tells a Projector to wait for the invitation rather than pushing in. Authority tells that same Projector, once an invitation arrives, whether this particular invitation is correct for them. Using one without the other is the most common reason people report that Human Design "did not work" — they waited correctly and then decided with their mind anyway.
Why is emotional authority told to wait before deciding?
Emotional authority runs on a wave that moves through time, so there is no truth in the moment — clarity only emerges across the wave. Someone with emotional authority who decides at a peak will regret it at the trough, and the reverse. Waiting does not mean waiting a fixed number of days; it means revisiting the decision across enough of your own wave that your feeling about it stabilizes. Most emotional authorities know their own timing within a few months of watching it.
What is a Profile in Human Design?
Your Profile is a two-number combination such as 1/3, 4/6, or 5/1, drawn from the lines of your Sun and Earth in the Personality and Design calculations. There are twelve profiles, and each describes a costume — a broad pattern of how you learn and how you interact with others. The first number is conscious and the second is unconscious, which is why other people often see your second number more clearly than you do.
What does it mean to have an open or undefined center?
An open or undefined center is where you do not generate consistent energy of your own and instead take in and amplify the energy of the people around you. Openness is not a weakness — it is where you are designed to be wise, because you sample so much variety there over a lifetime. It is also where conditioning is strongest, because an open center will chase the very thing it does not reliably have.
The experiment and deconditioning
What actually changes when you live the design, and how long it takes.
What is the seven-year deconditioning experiment?
Deconditioning is the process of living according to your strategy and authority long enough that the body releases patterns absorbed from other people. It is described as a seven-year process because the body renews itself over roughly that period. In practice, the first visible changes usually arrive within months, but the deeper structural shift — no longer being run by your open centers — takes years of consistent practice.
How do I start living my Human Design?
Start with one thing: make decisions using your strategy and authority, and nothing else. Do not try to apply gates, channels, profile lines, and transits at the same time — that is mental study, not the experiment. Get your chart, learn your type and authority precisely, then practice the decision mechanic for several months before adding any further layer. Everything else in the system is commentary on that foundation.
What is the "not-self" in Human Design?
The not-self is the version of you that is run by the mind and by your open centers rather than by your authority. Each type has a not-self signature that tells you when you are off track: frustration for Generators, anger for Manifestors, bitterness for Projectors, and disappointment for Reflectors. Those feelings are not problems to fix directly — they are instruments, telling you a decision was made the wrong way.
Can Human Design change over my lifetime?
Your chart never changes — it is fixed at birth. What changes is how much of it you are actually living. The same bodygraph read at 25 and at 50 is identical on paper, but a person who has run the experiment for decades operates very differently from one who has not. Planetary transits also color your experience day to day, but they do not alter the underlying design.
What if living my strategy and authority is not working?
In most cases what is not working is a detail of the mechanics rather than the system. The three most common causes are an inaccurate birth time producing the wrong authority, confusing strategy with authority, or applying the mind’s interpretation of authority rather than the body’s actual signal. A single session with a trained analyst usually locates which of those is happening faster than more reading will.
Authentic lineage vs pop Human Design
Why the source of your teaching changes what you receive.
What is "pop" Human Design?
Pop Human Design is the diluted version that circulates on social media: type descriptions turned into personality branding, strategy reduced to slogans, and authority dropped almost entirely. It typically keeps the vocabulary of the system while discarding the mechanics that make it work. The tell is usually the absence of deconditioning — pop versions promise identity and affirmation, whereas the original system asks you to run a multi-year experiment.
How do I know if a Human Design teacher is teaching the original system?
Ask three questions: where did they train, do they teach authority as seriously as type, and do they name the deconditioning experiment. Teachers in the Ra Uru Hu lineage can point to their training and to the school behind it, and they teach the mechanics whether or not the mechanics flatter you. There is a fuller checklist at thehumandesignsystem.com/choose-human-design-teacher.
What is the Ra Uru Hu lineage?
The lineage is the chain of teaching that traces back to Ra Uru Hu’s original transmission and the body of work he left, held internationally by Jovian Archive and taught professionally through the International Human Design School. Lineage is not a purity claim — every teacher alive today, including ours, is downstream of Ra rather than a source in their own right. What it does mean is traceability: you can see exactly where the teaching came from and check its fidelity to the original.
Does it matter where I learn Human Design?
It matters most for anything you intend to practice on other people. For personal use, a diluted introduction is mostly a slower route to the same place. For professional practice, teaching lineage determines whether you can read a chart you have never seen before, or only recite type descriptions. Certification issued after a weekend, with no analyst-level chart work, does not produce someone who can sit with a stranger’s bodygraph.
Is ICONIC Human Design Education affiliated with Jovian Archive and IHDS?
Dr. LaVeena B. Archers is the Education Director of Jovian Archive, the international rights holder of Ra Uru Hu’s Human Design System, and an IHDS Certified Independent Teacher. ICONIC Human Design Education is her own school, teaching within that lineage. The distinction is worth stating plainly: ICONIC is an independent school led by someone holding those roles, not a division of Jovian Archive or IHDS.
Why does authentic Human Design teaching cost more than online courses?
Because it is taught live by a certified teacher against a defined curriculum, rather than sold as a recorded product. Lineage training carries real prerequisites, real chart work, and real assessment, which is what makes the resulting credential mean something. The published prices are on thehumandesignsystem.com/certification, and there is a free chart plus a large free reference library on this site precisely so that cost is never the barrier to learning the basics.
Readings and professional analysis
Which session to book, what it costs, and how it is delivered.
Which Human Design reading should I book first?
Foundational Analysis, $697, is the right starting point for almost everyone. It covers your complete design — type, strategy, authority, profile, definition, and the shape of your openness — and gives you the base that every other session builds on. The named deep-dives assume you already know your basics, so booking one of those first usually means paying for context you have not yet built.
How much does a Human Design reading cost?
Readings range from $97 to $997 depending on depth. Overview and Coaching sessions are $299. Child Analysis is $397. Career & Work, Chiron Return, Incarnation Cross, and Uranus Opposition are $497 each. Family Analysis is $597. Foundational Analysis, Primary Health System, and Rave Psychology are $697 each. Initial Analysis is $897 and Relationship Analysis, which covers two charts, is $997.
Are Human Design readings done live or written?
Both formats are available and all readings are delivered online worldwide. The live option is a session with a certified analyst, with a recording and a written summary included on standard packages. The written option is a recorded and written analysis delivered without a live call, typically within about fourteen business days once your birth data is confirmed. Name your preferred format when you book.
What is the difference between a reading and the personalized report?
The $37 personalized report is a generated written analysis of your exact chart — twenty-plus pages covering type, subtype, True Profile, definition, incarnation cross, and every gate — delivered instantly. A reading is a human analyst working with your chart and your actual situation, either live or written. The report is the fastest way to see your whole design in writing; a reading is where the mechanics get applied to your life.
What is a Primary Health System (PHS) reading?
A Primary Health System reading, $697, covers the determination and environment side of your design: how your body is designed to take in food, what conditions support your digestion and cognition, and the environment where your decision-making sharpens. It is the health and physiology layer of Human Design rather than the psychology layer, and it assumes you already know your type, strategy, and authority.
Do you offer relationship or family readings?
Yes. Relationship Analysis, $997, covers two charts and the connection between them — what is defined together, where each person conditions the other, and the electromagnetics of the pairing. Family Analysis, $597, maps a household as a system. Child Analysis, $397, is a single child’s chart read for the people raising them.
Can I book a reading if I do not know anything about Human Design yet?
Yes, and Foundational Analysis is designed for exactly that. You do not need to study before booking. What you do need is accurate birth data — date, exact time, and place. If you would rather orient yourself first, get the free chart and read the guide at thehumandesignsystem.com/what-is-human-design, both of which cost nothing.
Who conducts the readings?
Readings are conducted by certified analysts trained in the Ra Uru Hu lineage, with Dr. LaVeena B. Archers leading the practice. Which analyst you work with depends on the session type and scheduling; advanced and specialist analyses are handled by analysts trained in that specific material. If you have a preference, say so when you book.
Certification and professional training
The professional path, what it costs, and what the credential means.
How do I become a certified Human Design practitioner?
Three programs make up the professional route: Foundations, from $350, where you learn your own design; Living Your Design Guide Certification at $1,800; and Professional Analyst Training at $3,450. That order is suggested rather than required — even the semesters within a level can be taken in any sequence. IHDS certification does require completing all of the coursework, so you choose the order but the full path is needed for the credential.
How much does Human Design certification cost?
Published prices are: Living Your Design workshop $350; Living Your Design Guide Training $1,800; the Foundations plus Guide bundle $3,447; Analyst Level I $3,450; Analyst Level II $1,600; Level III $800; Level IV $850; and Lifeline Analyst Mentoring, which includes all levels plus ongoing mentoring, $5,999. Every price is published on thehumandesignsystem.com/certification rather than quoted on a call.
Do you offer payment plans for certification?
Yes. Payment plans available at checkout (Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay). Financing is offered by Stripe at checkout on eligible amounts, so you can spread the cost while the enrollment completes immediately. There is no separate application process and no enrollment call required — the payment links on the certification page go straight to checkout.
Is your Human Design certification recognized?
The training teaches the original Ra Uru Hu system and is led by an IHDS Certified Independent Teacher who serves as Education Director of Jovian Archive, the international rights holder of Human Design. Human Design has no government licensing body, so "recognized" always means recognized within the lineage. If lineage authenticity is what you are checking for, that is what these credentials represent.
How long does Human Design certification take?
It depends on your pace, because the material is self-study on an open enrollment system rather than a fixed cohort. Students moving steadily typically complete Guide certification within several months and Analyst Level I across roughly a year. If you prefer external structure, live study groups and scheduled cohorts for single courses are available to join.
What is the difference between a Guide and an Analyst?
A Living Your Design Guide is certified to introduce people to their own design and to hold the foundational experiment — type, strategy, authority, and the beginning of deconditioning. An Analyst is trained to read any chart professionally, including the full mechanics of gates, channels, profile, definition, and incarnation cross. Guide training is the entry credential; Analyst training is the professional practice credential.
Do I need prior experience to enroll in certification?
No prior certification is required to begin. What is genuinely required is that you have been living your own strategy and authority for long enough to speak from experience rather than theory, which is why the Foundations level exists. Analyst training assumes foundational chart literacy, so most students arrive there having completed Guide-level material first.
Can I earn a living as a Human Design practitioner?
Some practitioners do, and many use it as one part of a coaching, consulting, or health practice rather than the whole of it. It is an unregulated field with no salary data, so any specific income claim you see should be treated with suspicion. What certification gives you is the competence to read charts professionally; building a practice around that is a separate body of work, which is what the business and career material on this site addresses.
What happens if certification is not the right fit after I enroll?
Live certification classes carry a 7-Day Fit Guarantee. Complete the First Arc — everything up to and including all Module 1 lessons — and attend two live sessions within your first seven days, and if it is not right you can request a full refund, no questions asked. That guarantee covers live certification classes specifically; other terms are set out at thehumandesignsystem.com/terms.
