How to Read a Channel: Roads, Tunnels, and Overpasses

Not every connection between two gates works the same way. Learning to tell a road from a tunnel from an overpass changes what a chart is actually telling you.

Once you’re comfortable finding channels in a chart, there’s a second, more useful layer of literacy worth building: not every channel works the same way. The geometry of how a channel connects two centers (whether it’s a road, a tunnel, or something more layered like an overpass) changes what that connection is actually telling you about a person’s access to their own definition.

The three basic shapes

A road connects a center to an adjacent one in a straightforward, single-line path: the clearest, most direct kind of definition, easy to spot once you know to look for the shape.

A tunnel connects two centers that aren’t next to each other, cutting underneath other centers to link up. This matters mechanically: a tunnel often represents something operating below conscious awareness until it surfaces, energy the person has consistent access to, but doesn’t necessarily see happening in real time the way they’d see a road.

An overpass happens when one channel’s path crosses over another center without actually connecting to it, a full overpass skips cleanly over, while a partial overpass grazes just enough of a center’s gate territory to matter without creating full definition there.

None of these shapes are better or worse than the others. They’re simply different mechanics for how consistency moves through a design, and reading them correctly tells you far more than just “this center is defined.”

Why this matters beyond the diagram

Two people can have technically “the same” channel and experience it completely differently depending on whether it arrives as a road, a tunnel, or layered under a partial overpass. A tunnel-based connection, for instance, often shows up as a quality the person takes completely for granted about themselves: visible to everyone around them, invisible to their own conscious narration, because the body has reliable access to it while the mind never quite catches it happening.

A useful practice: read public examples

One of the fastest ways to build real fluency with this skill is to practice on charts you already have some intuition about, public figures whose general demeanor is familiar, so you can compare the geometry against the person you already have some sense of. This isn’t about drawing conclusions regarding anyone’s character or politics; it’s purely a literacy exercise in matching shape to mechanism. A chart with a lot of “weak” definition, heavy openness relative to fixed channels, reads as flexible and receptive, not as a judgment on the person carrying it. A chart with dense, overlapping roads and tunnels reads as complex, layered, sometimes genuinely difficult to summarize in one line, regardless of who’s carrying it.

The exercise is simple: pick a channel, name its shape, and ask what that shape implies about where the person has consistent access to themselves versus where they’re operating on openness and amplification. Do this across a handful of charts and the shapes stop being abstract vocabulary. They start being something you can spot at a glance.
