Cosmology & The Mandala

Human Design for Astrologers: Bridging the Zodiac and the Science of Differentiation

A working bridge from the tropical zodiac to the BodyGraph: what Human Design keeps from astrology, what it drops, the 88° prenatal calculation, and a complete degree table of all 64 Gates sign by sign.

The Rave Mandala: a wheel of the twelve tropical zodiac signs with the 64 Human Design Gates numbered in a ring inside them. The eight G Center Gates are highlighted in gold and joined into a regular octagon. Gates 1, 2, 7 and 13 form a grand cross at 13°15′ of the fixed signs; Gates 10, 15, 25 and 46 form a second grand cross at 28°15′ of the mutable signs.

Hello, and welcome.

This piece grows directly out of a live presentation I gave for the Kepler College community. It is written for astrologers and serious students of astrology. You already speak fluently in signs, planets, houses, aspects and cycles. What follows is how that language maps onto another vast body of knowledge: the Human Design System, also called the Science of Differentiation.

I am a long-time student of the astrological sciences and a dedicated practitioner and educator of Human Design. I have been immersed in this system since 2012. Since 2014 I have served as a writer and educator affiliated with Jovian Archive, and as faculty with the International Human Design School and the BG5 Business Institute. My work is to help people see the living architecture of their own design, and to experiment with it in practical, embodied ways.

What follows is an invitation. Take what already lives in your astrological knowledge and notice how much of Human Design you already understand. You may be surprised how familiar the territory feels, and equally surprised by the two or three places where the two systems genuinely part company.

I have written this to be usable. Every degree figure below is the real mandala position, so you can plug the Gates into your own software today and start correlating charts tonight.

The short version, for the impatient

If you read nothing else, read this:

  • Human Design is built on the tropical zodiac. The same wheel, the same signs, the same ephemeris. Nothing is sidereal, nothing is displaced.
  • The 64 hexagrams of the I Ching are laid around that wheel as 64 Gates, each occupying exactly 5°37′30″ of arc. The wheel is called the Rave Mandala.
  • The Human Design year begins at ≈2° Aquarius, where Gate 41 starts, not at 0° Aries.
  • Two charts are calculated, not one. The Personality is the birth moment. The Design is the moment the Sun stood exactly 88° of arc earlier. That is roughly, but never exactly, 88 days before birth.
  • Thirteen bodies are used per side (Sun, Earth, both Nodes, Moon and the seven remaining planets), giving 26 activations. No houses. No aspects. No orbs. No dignities. No asteroids.
  • Those 26 activations light up Gates, which connect into 36 Channels, which define 9 Centers. The pattern of what is defined produces Type, Authority, Profile and Definition.
  • The output is not a forecast. It is a decision-making protocol: Strategy and Authority, to be experimented with over roughly seven years.

Everything below unpacks those seven lines.

The four streams of the synthesis

At the heart of Human Design sits the Rave Mandala, a wheel that looks immediately familiar to anyone who works with the Western zodiac. The twelve signs are there. The planetary bodies move through the same sequential space. What differs is the additional layer of information overlaid on that wheel and then mapped into a body graph.

The synthesis draws from four primary streams:

  • The Chinese I Ching: the 64 hexagrams become the 64 Gates.
  • The Western tropical zodiac: used for every personal calculation.
  • The Hindu-Brahmin chakra system: the traditional seven centers evolved into nine.
  • The Judaic Kabbalah: the Tree of Life geometry informing the structural logic of the graph.

These are not decorative borrowings, and Human Design does not treat them as four traditions in a blender. It treats them as four independent descriptions of the same underlying mechanic, and the claim is that when you overlay them correctly they resolve into a single coherent map of how consciousness and form meet in one specific human being.

When you look at a BodyGraph you are looking at a visual representation of the energetic architecture of a life. Nine Centers are connected by 36 Channels. Those Channels form when planetary activations open specific Gates at both ends and link them. Definition, the colored-in parts of the graph, shows what is consistent, fixed and reliable in a person. Openness shows where life is taken in, where conditioning occurs, and where wisdom accumulates over a lifetime.

What Human Design keeps from astrology, and what it drops

This is the section astrologers most want and most rarely get. Be prepared: Human Design keeps less than you expect, and what it drops, it drops completely.

Astrological element Used in Human Design? Notes
Tropical zodiac Yes The only zodiac used. All calculation is tropical.
Ephemeris positions Yes Standard, to the arcsecond. Accuracy matters enormously.
Sun and Earth Yes Earth is always the exact opposition to the Sun and is always shown.
Moon Yes Carries Determination in Variable; the fastest-moving activation.
Lunar Nodes Yes Both, always. They carry Environment and Perspective.
Mercury → Pluto Yes All seven. Retrograde motion is not separately interpreted.
Houses No There is no house system. No Ascendant, MC, or angles.
Aspects and orbs No Geometry between planets is not read. Position is everything.
Rulership, dignity, exaltation No Not part of the mechanics.
Chiron (Kiron), asteroids, Lilith, Arabic parts No Not in the standard BodyGraph, though some practitioners work with Chiron anyway.
Progressions, directions, solar returns No Replaced by the fixed Design calculation and by transits.
Transits Yes Called the Program: the daily conditioning field, not a personal forecast.

Two of those absences are worth pausing on, because they are where astrologers most often stumble.

There are no aspects. A Human Design chart does not care that your Mars trines your Saturn. It cares only which 5°37′30″ segment each body occupies. All relational information in the system comes from geometry in the graph, meaning whether two activated Gates sit at either end of the same Channel, not from geometry in the sky. Two planets in exact conjunction may activate the same Gate and add nothing; two planets 140° apart may complete a Channel and change everything.

There are no houses. The entire “where in life does this play out” question, which astrology answers through houses, Human Design answers through a completely different mechanism: which Center the Gate belongs to, and whether that Center ends up defined or open. A Gate in the Throat is about expression and manifestation. The same Gate number in the Root would be about pressure. The Center is the domain.

If you can hold those two facts, everything else translates cleanly.

The Rave Mandala: the wheel you already know

Sixty-four Gates around 360 degrees gives each Gate exactly 5°37′30″ of arc, or 5.625 degrees. That number is worth memorizing, because it lets you convert any natal position into a Gate in your head, roughly, in a couple of seconds.

The wheel does not begin at 0° Aries. It begins at Gate 41, which starts at 2°00′ Aquarius, the point the Sun reaches around January 22 each year. In Human Design this is the Rave New Year, and Gate 41 is called the start codon: the system maps the 64 Gates onto the 64 codons of DNA, and Gate 41 corresponds to the codon that initiates transcription. Whatever you make of that claim biologically, it is why the Human Design year and the astrological year do not share a starting point.

From that origin the Gates run in zodiacal order, and the sequence is fixed. It is not derived from planetary condition or from anything variable; it is a permanent lattice laid over the wheel, the same for every chart ever cast.

Personality and Design: two calculations, one life

Here is the first clean structural difference from conventional practice.

Human Design works with two separate calculations, brought together into a single graph:

  • The Personality, printed in black on the right of the chart, is calculated for the exact moment of birth. This is the conscious side: the passenger, the witness, the mind’s story of “who I am.” You have some access to it. You can talk about it.
  • The Design, printed in red on the left, is calculated for the moment the Sun stood exactly 88° of arc earlier. This is the unconscious side: the biogenetic inheritance, the form, the vehicle itself. You cannot see it directly. Other people see it in you long before you do.

Two precision notes that matter to anyone doing the arithmetic:

It is 88 degrees, not 88 days. The Earth’s orbital speed varies, fastest near perihelion in early January and slowest near aphelion in early July, so the elapsed time for 88° of solar arc ranges from roughly 87 to 92 calendar days. A November birth and a May birth do not have the same prenatal interval. Software that subtracts a flat 88 days will be wrong by up to four days, which is enough to move the Design Moon by fifty degrees.

The Design is not the subconscious. This is the single most common mistranslation when psychologically-trained astrologers arrive. It is not repressed material and it is not a shadow in the Jungian sense. It is the body’s own intelligence, the genetic lineage that built the form. When the two calculations are combined we see the relationship between mind and body: between the story we tell about ourselves and the life that is actually being lived.

Astrologers will immediately recognize the family resemblance to prenatal epoch work and to the Hellenistic interest in the conception moment. The resemblance is real, but Human Design’s version is fixed, mechanical, and non-negotiable: 88° of solar arc, no adjustment, no rectification.

Accurate birth time therefore matters as much here as it does in your own practice, and arguably more, because there are no angles to rectify against. And on a question I am asked constantly: if the birth was by emergency Caesarean or premature delivery, the moment the body left the womb is still the imprint moment. The system uses the actual moment of separation, whatever brought it about, and the corresponding earlier Design calculation follows from it.

The thirteen activations

Each side of the chart carries thirteen positions. Since the Earth is always the exact opposition of the Sun, and the South Node the exact opposition of the North, there are eleven independent positions per side and twenty-six activations in total.

Body Human Design keynote Nearest astrological cousin
Sun ~70% of the chart’s neutrino imprint; core theme of the incarnation Solar purpose, but weighted far more heavily
Earth Grounding, balance, what stabilizes the Sun Rarely used in Western practice; central here
North Node The environment and direction of the second half of life Nodal axis, but non-karmic in framing
South Node The environment and direction of the first half of life ,
Moon The driver; what keeps the life in motion Emotional body, quite different emphasis
Mercury What one is here to communicate Very close to astrological Mercury
Venus Values, morality, what one is here to appreciate Close to astrological Venus
Mars Immaturity, the untrained energy that matures over time Inverted from the usual martial reading
Jupiter Law, protection, the terms on which one prospers Recognizably Jupiterian
Saturn Discipline and correction; where the pressure to mature lands Recognizably Saturnian
Uranus Chaos and the unusual; peaks at the Uranus opposition Recognizably Uranian
Neptune The spiritual veil; what cannot be known directly Recognizably Neptunian
Pluto Truth and transformation; the great revealer Recognizably Plutonian

Notice how many of these keynotes you already hold. The main surprises are Earth (elevated to co-equal status with the Sun, which no modern Western tradition does), Mars (read as immaturity rather than assertion), and Jupiter (read as law rather than expansion).

The Nodes deserve a special note for astrologers, because Human Design does something with them you will not have seen. They are not primarily about karma here. They describe environment: literally where the body should be, the physical setting in which the design functions correctly. They also describe perspective, the angle from which the mind sees. The Nodes mark the great hinge of a life around the Uranus opposition in the late thirties to early forties, which is why that transit gets its own treatment in this work. If you want the long version, see the Uranus Opposition reading.

Chiron, spelled Kiron in much of the Human Design literature, needs a more careful answer than most of the list above. In traditional Human Design it is not part of the Gate-activation mechanics: it activates nothing in the BodyGraph and appears in no standard chart. That is the mechanical position, and it is worth stating plainly so nobody goes looking for a Chiron Gate that does not exist.

It is not, however, dismissed. This lineage takes the Chiron Return around age fifty seriously as the planting of one’s purpose, a distinct life passage rather than a chart activation. And a number of practitioners do work with Chiron alongside the BodyGraph and report interesting results. That is experimentation rather than established mechanics, which is exactly how it should be described: outside the traditional system, and genuinely worth exploring if it draws you.

Gates, Lines, and the principle of genetic continuity

Each of the 64 Gates is a hexagram, and each hexagram divides into six Lines. The principle of genetic continuity states that Line 1 resonates with every other Line 1 across the entire matrix, Line 2 with every other Line 2, and so on through all six. The Lines carry a consistent thematic signature no matter which Gate they appear in: foundation, projection, adaptation, externalization, universalization, transition. That is one of the main reasons the system holds together internally rather than reading as sixty-four unrelated symbols.

Beneath the Lines lie finer differentiations still: Color, Tone, and Base. The arithmetic is exact, and astrologers, of all people, will appreciate seeing it laid out:

Division Arc Sun moves through one in about Moon moves through one in about
Gate (1 of 64) 5°37′30″ 5 days 17 hours 10 hours 15 minutes
Line (1 of 6) 0°56′15″ 22 hours 50 minutes 1 hour 42 minutes
Color (1 of 6) 0°09′22.5″ 3 hours 48 minutes 17 minutes
Tone (1 of 6) 0°01′33.75″ 38 minutes 2 minutes 51 seconds
Base (1 of 5) 0°00′18.75″ 7 minutes 36 seconds 34 seconds

Sixty-four Gates × six Lines × six Colors × six Tones × five Bases gives 69,120 discrete divisions of the wheel, each one 18¾ arcseconds wide.

This is where the “differentiation” in Science of Differentiation stops being a slogan. It is also the mechanical answer to a question every astrologer has been asked at a dinner party: what about twins? Twins born eleven minutes apart share every planet, every sign, every degree, and the Sun’s Base has already changed once. The Moon’s Base has changed nearly twenty times. Twins and triplets routinely differ at these deeper layers, particularly around the rapidly moving Moon, producing genuinely different relationships to their own awareness and to the body’s sense of gravity and balance.

For most chart work you will stay at Gate and Line. But knowing the substructure exists explains why Human Design practitioners are so insistent about birth time to the minute.

Profiles: the costume the life wears

Look at the two numbers appearing after the Sun and Earth Gate numbers on both sides of a chart, for example 3/5. Read from black to red: the first number is the Personality Sun’s Line, the second is the Design Sun’s Line. That is the Profile, and it describes the public role, the costume the life wears through the world.

There are twelve Profiles, and they fall into three categories of angularity:

Angularity Profiles Theme
Right Angle (Personal Destiny) 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6 Research and development. These lives create through trial and error and are here primarily for their own process. The majority of humanity.
Juxtaposition (Fixed Fate) 4/1 The narrow bridge. A fixed, one-track life that acts as glue between the personal and the transpersonal.
Left Angle (Transpersonal Karma) 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3 Here to fulfill purpose with specific others. Often accompanied by a deep sense of recognition: “I have known this person before.”

The angularity distinction will feel familiar to any astrologer who has worked with the difference between a chart that unfolds through its own internal logic and one that only makes sense through relationship. Human Design makes that distinction structural rather than interpretive.

The Profile is not a personality type in the ordinary sense. It is a genetic imprint of how purpose moves through a life. And it nests inside something larger: combine the Personality Sun/Earth with the Design Sun/Earth and you get the Incarnation Cross, of which there are 192. That is the closest thing Human Design has to a statement of life purpose, and it is the four-gate structure astrologers usually find most immediately readable. There is a full index of the 192 Crosses on this site, and a dedicated Incarnation Cross reading if you want your own decoded properly.

Aura Types, Strategy and Signature

The body is built by the aura, not the other way around. Form follows function. Everything in the previous sections resolves, mechanically, into one of four Types. This is the practical output of the whole system.

Type Share Aura Strategy Signature Not-Self
Generator ~37% Open and enveloping Wait to respond Satisfaction Frustration
Manifesting Generator ~33% Open and enveloping Respond, then inform Satisfaction Frustration and anger
Projector ~20% Focused and absorbing Wait for recognition and invitation Success Bitterness
Manifestor ~9% Closed and repelling Inform before you act Peace Anger
Reflector ~1% Resistant and sampling Wait a full lunar cycle Surprise Disappointment

Generators and Manifesting Generators together account for roughly seventy percent of humanity: an open, enveloping aura that magnetizes life toward it and is designed to respond rather than initiate.

These are not psychological labels, and this is the point astrologers most often need to hear twice. They describe the energetic frequency of the form and the correct way for that form to make decisions and move through the world. When a person lives according to their Strategy, the Signature frequency rises from within, unbidden. When they do not, the not-self theme becomes a reliable alarm system. It is not a character flaw but a signal that a decision was made from the wrong place.

Beneath Type sits Authority, the specific inner mechanism that says yes or no. There are seven: Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental and Lunar. Authority is determined by a fixed hierarchy of which Centers are defined, and it overrides preference, reasoning, and advice, including mine.

The complete Gate-to-degree reference, sign by sign

This is the part you can actually use. Below is every Gate, in zodiacal order, with its exact mandala arc, its Center, and the approximate solar transit dates.

A note on reading these tables: because 30° of a sign does not divide evenly into 5°37′30″ Gates, most signs contain four or five whole Gates plus two that straddle the cusps. The straddling Gates are listed in both signs, with their full arc shown, so you always know where the boundary actually falls.

Aries

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
25 The Spirit of the Self G 28°15′ Pisces – 3°53′ Aries Mar 19 – Mar 24
17 Opinions Ajna 3°53′ – 9°30′ Aries Mar 24 – Mar 30
21 The Hunter Heart / Will 9°30′ – 15°08′ Aries Mar 30 – Apr 4
51 Shock Heart / Will 15°08′ – 20°45′ Aries Apr 5 – Apr 10
42 Growth Sacral 20°45′ – 26°23′ Aries Apr 10 – Apr 16
3 Ordering Sacral 26°23′ Aries – 2°00′ Taurus Apr 16 – Apr 22

Aries is the only sign carrying two Heart Center gates, and it is the sign of the will. Gate 51 pairs with Gate 25 to form the Channel of Initiation (25–51): the capacity to initiate from a place of higher self and pure willpower, and very often a design that needs to be first. If a client’s chart has that channel, the Aries flavor is not an interpretation; it is where the gates literally live.

Taurus

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
3 Ordering Sacral 26°23′ Aries – 2°00′ Taurus Apr 16 – Apr 22
27 Caring Sacral 2°00′ – 7°38′ Taurus Apr 22 – Apr 27
24 Rationalization Ajna 7°38′ – 13°15′ Taurus Apr 28 – May 3
2 Direction of the Self G 13°15′ – 18°53′ Taurus May 3 – May 9
23 Assimilation Throat 18°53′ – 24°30′ Taurus May 9 – May 15
8 Contribution Throat 24°30′ Taurus – 0°08′ Gemini May 15 – May 21

Taurus carries a strongly individual, fixed quality. Think of the immovable bull. There is one striking exception: Gate 27, Nourishment and Caring, is purely tribal, the re-parenting frequency, the gate of feeding and raising the young. In a sign otherwise dominated by individual and abstract-individual circuitry, it stands out sharply.

Gemini

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
8 Contribution Throat 24°30′ Taurus – 0°08′ Gemini May 15 – May 21
20 The Now Throat 0°08′ – 5°45′ Gemini May 21 – May 26
16 Skills Throat 5°45′ – 11°23′ Gemini May 27 – Jun 1
35 Change Throat 11°23′ – 17°00′ Gemini Jun 2 – Jun 7
45 The Gatherer Throat 17°00′ – 22°38′ Gemini Jun 7 – Jun 13
12 Caution Throat 22°38′ – 28°15′ Gemini Jun 13 – Jun 19
15 Extremes G 28°15′ Gemini – 3°53′ Cancer Jun 19 – Jun 25

Gemini is the Throat. Six of the eleven Throat gates fall inside this sign, more than any other by a wide margin. Every Gate in the Throat carries a specific voice, a genetically imprinted way of speaking and transmitting: I know, I try, I think, I am. Planetary placements here give a person a fixed manner of expression that no amount of communication training will overwrite.

Cancer

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
15 Extremes G 28°15′ Gemini – 3°53′ Cancer Jun 19 – Jun 25
52 Stillness Root 3°53′ – 9°30′ Cancer Jun 25 – Jul 1
39 Provocation Root 9°30′ – 15°08′ Cancer Jul 1 – Jul 7
53 Beginnings Root 15°08′ – 20°45′ Cancer Jul 7 – Jul 12
62 Details Throat 20°45′ – 26°23′ Cancer Jul 13 – Jul 18
56 Stimulation Throat 26°23′ Cancer – 2°00′ Leo Jul 19 – Jul 24

Cancer holds an unusual combination: three Root gates, two Throat gates, and Gate 15 straddling in from Gemini. The two Throat gates here are the great mental voices: 62 is “I think” and 56 is “I believe”. Both sit immediately beside the Root pressure that drives them. And Gate 15, Extremes, is the full range of human behavior, the gate that refuses to be normal.

Leo

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
56 Stimulation Throat 26°23′ Cancer – 2°00′ Leo Jul 19 – Jul 24
31 Influence Throat 2°00′ – 7°38′ Leo Jul 25 – Jul 30
33 Privacy Throat 7°38′ – 13°15′ Leo Jul 31 – Aug 5
7 The Role of the Self G 13°15′ – 18°53′ Leo Aug 5 – Aug 11
4 Formulization Ajna 18°53′ – 24°30′ Leo Aug 11 – Aug 17
29 Perseverance Sacral 24°30′ Leo – 0°08′ Virgo Aug 17 – Aug 23

Leo contains an entire Channel within a single sign: Gate 31 at 2°00′ Leo and Gate 7 at 13°15′ Leo form the Channel of the Alpha (31–7), leadership for good or for ill. This is the elected leader whose identity is broadcast through the Throat, and the fact that both ends of it are Leonine is the kind of correspondence that makes astrologers sit up.

Virgo

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
29 Perseverance Sacral 24°30′ Leo – 0°08′ Virgo Aug 17 – Aug 23
59 Intimacy Sacral 0°08′ – 5°45′ Virgo Aug 23 – Aug 28
40 Aloneness Heart / Will 5°45′ – 11°23′ Virgo Aug 29 – Sep 3
64 Confusion Head 11°23′ – 17°00′ Virgo Sep 4 – Sep 9
47 Realization Ajna 17°00′ – 22°38′ Virgo Sep 9 – Sep 15
6 Friction Solar Plexus 22°38′ – 28°15′ Virgo Sep 15 – Sep 21
46 Determination G 28°15′ Virgo – 3°53′ Libra Sep 21 – Sep 26

Virgo is remarkable: it contains two complete Channels. Gate 59 and Gate 6 form the Channel of Mating (59–6), the only channel in the system directly concerned with reproduction and the breaking down of barriers to intimacy. Gate 64 and Gate 47 form the Channel of Abstraction (64–47), mental pressure to make sense of the past, confusion resolving into realization. Mutable, analytical, and pressed to figure things out: it is hard to think of a more Virgoan pair.

Libra

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
46 Determination G 28°15′ Virgo – 3°53′ Libra Sep 21 – Sep 26
18 Correction Spleen 3°53′ – 9°30′ Libra Sep 27 – Oct 2
48 Depth Spleen 9°30′ – 15°08′ Libra Oct 2 – Oct 8
57 Intuitive Clarity Spleen 15°08′ – 20°45′ Libra Oct 8 – Oct 14
32 Continuity Spleen 20°45′ – 26°23′ Libra Oct 14 – Oct 19
50 Values Spleen 26°23′ Libra – 2°00′ Scorpio Oct 20 – Oct 25

Libra is the Spleen: survival intelligence, pattern recognition, intuition in the moment, and the love of the body. Gate 46, Determination, straddles in from Virgo and is literally the love of the body, the gate of being in the right place at the right time. Libra’s relational reputation shows up here not as partnership but as bonding and embodied security: the splenic instinct for who and what is safe.

Scorpio

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
50 Values Spleen 26°23′ Libra – 2°00′ Scorpio Oct 20 – Oct 25
28 The Game Player Spleen 2°00′ – 7°38′ Scorpio Oct 25 – Oct 31
44 Alertness Spleen 7°38′ – 13°15′ Scorpio Oct 31 – Nov 5
1 Self-Expression G 13°15′ – 18°53′ Scorpio Nov 5 – Nov 11
43 Insight Ajna 18°53′ – 24°30′ Scorpio Nov 11 – Nov 17
14 Power Skills Sacral 24°30′ Scorpio – 0°08′ Sagittarius Nov 17 – Nov 22

Scorpio activates the deep survival themes: fears related to the physical plane, to the body, and to individual empowerment. Gate 28 is the Game Player, the gate of struggle and of the risk that makes life meaningful; its shadow is the fear of death and its gift is knowing what is worth dying for. Gate 44 carries the fear of the past and the nose for other people’s patterns. It is difficult to imagine a more Scorpionic pair of keynotes, and they were assigned by hexagram sequence, not by anyone’s aesthetic judgment.

Sagittarius

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
14 Power Skills Sacral 24°30′ Scorpio – 0°08′ Sagittarius Nov 17 – Nov 22
34 Power Sacral 0°08′ – 5°45′ Sagittarius Nov 22 – Nov 28
9 Focus Sacral 5°45′ – 11°23′ Sagittarius Nov 28 – Dec 3
5 Fixed Rhythms Sacral 11°23′ – 17°00′ Sagittarius Dec 3 – Dec 9
26 The Egoist Heart / Will 17°00′ – 22°38′ Sagittarius Dec 9 – Dec 14
11 Ideas Ajna 22°38′ – 28°15′ Sagittarius Dec 14 – Dec 20
10 Behavior of the Self G 28°15′ Sagittarius – 3°53′ Capricorn Dec 20 – Dec 25

Sagittarius is the most Sacral sign in the wheel. Four of the nine Sacral gates fall here, including Gate 34, raw undirected power itself. It also contains a complete Channel from one end of the sign to the other: Gate 34 at 0°08′ and Gate 10 at 28°15′ form the Channel of Exploration (10–34), the design of following one’s own convictions, behavior arising directly from individual response. Sagittarius as the sign of conviction, running the length of the sign as pure Sacral power: the correspondence is exact.

Capricorn

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
10 Behavior of the Self G 28°15′ Sagittarius – 3°53′ Capricorn Dec 20 – Dec 25
58 Vitality Root 3°53′ – 9°30′ Capricorn Dec 25 – Dec 31
38 The Fighter Root 9°30′ – 15°08′ Capricorn Jan 1 – Jan 6
54 Ambition Root 15°08′ – 20°45′ Capricorn Jan 5 – Jan 11
61 Inner Truth Head 20°45′ – 26°23′ Capricorn Jan 11 – Jan 16
60 Limitation Root 26°23′ Capricorn – 2°00′ Aquarius Jan 16 – Jan 22

Capricorn is the Root Center in concentrated form: four Root gates, including Gate 54, Ambition, the drive to rise, and Gate 38, the Fighter, the stubborn refusal to give up. Between them sits Gate 61, Inner Truth, the pressure to know the unknowable, the mystical gate. A Capricorn Moon in Gate 61 is a placement I see constantly in people who end up doing this work, and the combination of ambition, endurance and the pressure toward mystery is not accidental.

Aquarius

Gate Name Center Arc Sun
60 Limitation Root 26°23′ Capricorn – 2°00′ Aquarius Jan 16 – Jan 22
41 Contraction Root 2°00′ – 7°38′ Aquarius Jan 22 – Jan 27
19 Wanting Root 7°38′ – 13°15′ Aquarius Jan 27 – Feb 2
13 The Listener G 13°15′ – 18°53′ Aquarius Feb 2 – Feb 7
49 Principles Solar Plexus 18°53′ – 24°30′ Aquarius Feb 7 – Feb 13
30 Recognition of Feelings Solar Plexus 24°30′ Aquarius – 0°08′ Pisces Feb 13 – Feb 18

Aquarius carries two complete Channels inside one sign. Gates 41 and 30 form the Channel of Recognition (30–41), focused energy on feelings, fate and desire, the fuel of all human experience. Gates 19 and 49 form the Channel of Synthesis (49–19), the tribal channel of sensitivity, needs and principles, and the one currently undergoing mutation as we approach the 2027 shift.

This is also where the Human Design year begins, at 2° Aquarius. The start codon, the first breath, and the two channels most directly implicated in the coming mutation all occupy the same thirty degrees.

Pisces

Gate Name Center Arc Sun

Pisces is the Solar Plexus. Five emotional gates fall here, more than the rest of the zodiac combined outside of Aquarius. The emotional wave in this arc runs fluid, oceanic, sometimes tsunami-like: Gate 55 is the wave of spirit and moods, Gate 22 is emotional openness and grace, Gate 36 is emotional crisis and the hunger for new experience. Alongside them, Gate 25 holds universal love and the spirit of the self, and Gate 63 holds doubt.

What astrologers notice first

When astrologers start plotting the Gates onto a wheel they already know, five structural patterns tend to jump out. All five are checkable against the tables above.

1. The Spleen is one unbroken arc. All seven Splenic gates (18, 48, 57, 32, 50, 28, 44) run consecutively from 3°53′ Libra to 13°15′ Scorpio, a continuous 39°22′30″ stretch with nothing else interleaved. No other Center is arranged this way. The body’s oldest awareness system occupies a single unbroken band of the zodiac.

2. Every Root gate lives in Cancer, Capricorn or Aquarius. All nine of them: 52, 39, 53 in Cancer; 58, 38, 54, 60 in Capricorn; 41 and 19 in Aquarius. The Root, which is adrenalized pressure, stress and the drive to get things done, is confined to the Cancer–Capricorn axis and the sign that follows it. Nothing in Aries, nothing in Libra, nothing in the whole first half of the wheel.

3. Every Throat gate lives between Taurus and Leo. All eleven of them (23, 8, 20, 16, 35, 45, 12, 62, 56, 31, 33) fall inside a ninety-degree window running from mid-Taurus to mid-Leo. Human expression is concentrated in one quadrant.

4. The G Center forms a perfect octagon. This is the one that stops people. The eight G Center gates are spaced at exactly 45° intervals around the wheel:

  • 13°15′ of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius: Gates 2, 7, 1 and 13. An exact fixed grand cross, and these are precisely the four gates of the Cross of the Sphinx: direction, role, self-expression and listening.
  • 28°15′ of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces: Gates 15, 46, 10 and 25. An exact mutable grand cross, and these are the four gates of the Vessel of Love: extremes, the body, behavior and spirit.

Identity and direction, in other words, are laid out as two perfect grand crosses eight degrees and change apart. Whatever you conclude about the system, that is not an accident of interpretation. It is geometry.

5. Gates 63 and 64 are an exact opposition. The two Head-Center gates of the abstract stream, Doubt at 11°23′–17°00′ Pisces and Confusion at 11°23′–17°00′ Virgo, sit in perfect mutual opposition across the Virgo–Pisces axis. Similarly, Gate 26 (17°00′ Sagittarius) and Gate 45 (17°00′ Gemini) oppose exactly, and both are tribal Ego-circuit gates. The mandala is full of these.

A practical protocol: reading a BodyGraph beside a natal chart

Here is how I would suggest an astrologer actually begin, in order.

  1. Run the chart properly. Use a free BodyGraph or mybodygraph.com, the official source. Do not hand-derive it; the 88° calculation and the substructure need real software.
  2. Find the Sun and Earth on both sides. Four gates, four line numbers. These are the Incarnation Cross and roughly seventy percent of the imprint. If you only ever learn one thing, learn these.
  3. Read the Profile. Black line, then red line. Note the angularity. This tells you whether the life is designed to unfold through its own process or through specific others.
  4. Identify Type and Strategy. This is the operating instruction, and it is not negotiable by preference.
  5. Identify Authority. This is how the yes and no arrive in the body, and it will very often contradict what the mind wants.
  6. Now overlay the natal chart. Look at which planets sit in which Gates. Where your astrological reading and the Gate keynote agree, you have a doubled theme. Where they seem to disagree, you have usually found the Personality/Design split: the mind’s story sitting against the body’s mechanics.
  7. Note the openness. Which Centers are white? That is where the person takes in and amplifies others, where conditioning has been strongest, and where the mind will be least reliable in making decisions.

That last step is where astrologers add something genuinely valuable, in my experience. You are already trained to see a chart as a whole system rather than a list of traits, and openness in a BodyGraph is precisely the kind of structural absence that untrained readers overlook.

Where the two systems genuinely disagree

I would rather name these honestly than paper over them.

On prediction. Astrology, in most of its forms, is willing to say something about what will happen and when. Human Design is not. Transits are read as the conditioning field, the Program, not as personal forecast. The system’s whole proposition is that you cannot know what is coming; you can only be in a position to meet it correctly. This is a real philosophical divergence, not a difference of technique.

On the mind. Astrology generally treats the mind as an instrument of insight to be refined. Human Design treats the mind as an unreliable decision-maker: brilliant as an outer authority, useless as an inner one. It hands decision-making to the body instead. Practitioners of any mentally-oriented craft usually find this the hardest thing to accept.

On free will. Human Design’s framing is deterministic in a way most contemporary astrology is not. The claim is that the form is fixed and the only genuine choice available is whether to operate it correctly. Some astrologers find this liberating and some find it intolerable; either reaction is reasonable.

On synthesis. Astrology has two and a half millennia of documented lineage, internal debate, and competing schools. Human Design is a single revelatory transmission received by one man in 1987, and it does not have that apparatus. I say this as a practitioner: it should be experimented with, not believed.

Which is, in fact, exactly what the system asks for.

Looking toward 2027

The larger background frequency is shifting.

Human Design describes global cycles running in long arcs. It teaches that the current cycle, the Cross of Planning, has been in force since 1615 and ends in 2027, giving way to the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix. Accompanying that transition is a described mutation in the Solar Plexus Center, which over generations is said to reorganize how human beings process emotion and awareness.

The astrologically checkable part of this is Pluto. Pluto entered Aquarius in 2023–24 and is now moving through the early degrees of that sign, the arc the mandala assigns to Gate 41, the start codon. The Channel of Synthesis (49–19), also entirely within Aquarius, is the tribal circuitry most directly implicated in the described mutation.

I offer that as the system’s own teaching rather than as a prediction I am underwriting. It is not personal-chart material, and no one’s individual experiment depends on being right about it. But it is the larger field in which all of our individual experiments are taking place, and if you want to follow the argument properly there is a good deal written about 2027 and the global cycles on this site.

Common mistakes astrologers make in their first year

From watching a great many astrologers come into this work:

  • Reading Gates as sign-flavored planets. Gate 41 is not “Aquarian Mars.” The Gate has its own keynote, and the Center it belongs to sets the domain.
  • Looking for aspects. There are none. If you catch yourself noting a square, you have slipped back into your first language.
  • Treating the Design side as the shadow. It is the body, not the repressed.
  • Overriding Authority with interpretation. The most common failure mode among skilled chart readers: seeing something in the graph and letting the analysis outrank the client’s own inner Authority. It never works.
  • Rushing to Variable. Color, Tone, Base and the arrows are genuinely advanced material. Strategy and Authority first, for at least a year.
  • Skipping the experiment. This is not a system to master intellectually. It is a system to run on yourself and observe.

The experiment

Human Design is not another body of knowledge to accumulate. It is an experiment in living according to the mechanics of your own form.

Strategy and Authority are the practical tools. They return decision-making to the body rather than the mind. Over time, as the form is treated according to its design, the mind begins to observe a life that is more aligned, more resonant, and often more surprising than the mental story ever predicted. The conventional guidance is to give it seven years, one full cell replacement cycle, before drawing conclusions.

The openness in the chart is not a flaw. It is where we take in the other, where we learn, where we are conditioned, and where we eventually develop wisdom. Conditioning itself is not the enemy; it is the medium through which life is experienced. What matters is whether decisions are being made from the open places, where we amplify and distort whatever is around us, or from the reliable definition.

Frequently asked questions

Is Human Design tropical or sidereal?

Tropical, without exception. Every personal calculation in Human Design uses the Western tropical zodiac. There is no sidereal variant of the BodyGraph.

Does Human Design use houses or aspects?

No. There is no house system, no Ascendant or Midheaven, and no aspect doctrine. All relational information comes from whether activated Gates connect into Channels within the graph, not from angular relationships between planets in the sky.

What exactly is the 88-degree Design calculation?

The Design chart is cast for the moment the Sun stood exactly 88° of arc earlier in the zodiac than at birth. Because the Earth’s orbital speed varies, that corresponds to between roughly 87 and 92 calendar days depending on time of year. It is an arc measurement, never a fixed number of days.

How wide is a single Gate in degrees?

Exactly 5°37′30″, or 360° divided by 64. Each Gate divides into six Lines of 0°56′15″, and below that into Color, Tone and Base, for 69,120 divisions of the wheel in total.

Where does the Human Design year begin?

At 2°00′ Aquarius, where Gate 41 begins, around January 22 each year. This is called the Rave New Year. Gate 41 corresponds to the genetic start codon in the system’s DNA mapping.

Is Chiron used in Human Design?

Not in traditional Human Design, where it is not part of the Gate-activation mechanics. Thirteen bodies are used per side: Sun, Earth, North and South Nodes, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Chiron, often spelled Kiron in Human Design writing, is treated separately in this lineage, chiefly in relation to the Chiron Return around age fifty. Some practitioners do work with it alongside the BodyGraph and report interesting results, but that sits outside the traditional mechanics rather than inside them.

Can I learn Human Design faster because I already know astrology?

Yes, substantially. You already have the wheel, the ephemeris, the planetary keynotes and the habit of thinking systemically. The two things you will have to set down are aspects and houses, and the thing you will have to genuinely adopt is running the experiment on yourself rather than analyzing it.

What is the difference between Personality and Design in one sentence?

Personality is the conscious mind’s story of who you are, calculated at birth; Design is the unconscious body you actually inhabit, calculated 88° of solar arc earlier, and other people see your Design long before you do.

An invitation

If you already work with the zodiac, you already know more Human Design than you realize. The Gates are sitting in degrees you have looked at ten thousand times. The planetary keynotes are largely familiar. The architecture of purpose, conditioning and differentiation is simply rendered in a different visual and mechanical language.

So my invitation is a practical one. Get your free BodyGraph. Look at the Sun and Earth on both the Personality and Design sides. Notice your Profile. Identify your Type and your Strategy. Then begin the experiment of living according to the form rather than the mental story. Put the tables above beside your own natal chart and start correlating.

Notice what feels true. Notice where the body already knows. Notice the places where astrology and Human Design illuminate each other, and the places where they will not be reconciled.

We are all walking each other home. The costume each of us wears, whether oriented toward self, toward connection, or toward fulfillment, is simply the particular way this life is designed to participate in that larger movement.

Welcome to the experiment.

About this article

This began as a guest presentation I gave for the Kepler College community, and I am grateful to them for the invitation and for the quality of the questions that came back at me. Several of them shaped sections above that did not exist in the original talk.

That talk promised attendees a handout of the Gate degree ranges. Those tables are now published in full in this article, for everyone, rather than circulated privately after the fact. The degrees, the substructure arithmetic, the sign-by-sign breakdown and the structural findings are all here to be copied into your own software and checked against your own charts. If you find an error in them, I want to hear about it.

Everything else here (the comparison tables, the reading protocol, the honest account of where the two systems diverge) is expansion written since, and represents my own view rather than any position of Kepler College.

I teach the original system transmitted by Ra Uru Hu, written throughout in my own words rather than reproduced from lineage course material. If you run an astrology school, certification program or study group and would like this material presented to your students, get in touch. This is work I am always glad to do.

Educational material only. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice.
