Reading Definition Patterns in the Charts of Kennedy, Trump, and Schwarzenegger

A teaching look at how channels create consistent, hidden, or overlapping definition, using the public charts of John Kennedy, Donald Trump, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as examples.

I use famous charts in my classes constantly, not because a bodygraph tells you anything about someone’s politics or their character, but because public figures give students a shared reference point for practicing the mechanics. This is not political commentary, and nothing here is an endorsement or a criticism of any of these men. It’s a look at how definition actually works, using three very different, very public charts to show it.

One quick caveat before any of this: public figures rarely have a verified birth time on record. A wrong time can shift the Personality side of a chart and change which gates are active there. Treat anything below as an illustration of mechanics, not a certified read of these particular men.

What a channel is actually showing you

A gate on its own is just an activation, a potential. It only becomes definition, something the body consistently runs on, once both ends of a channel are active. One end can come from the conscious (personality) side, the other from the unconscious (design) side, or both ends can come from the same side. How those two halves line up tells you whether that piece of the design is something the person has steady access to, something that operates below their own awareness until it surfaces, or something unusually rich in overlap.

That’s the whole exercise: look at where the personality and design activations land on a channel, and read what kind of access that creates.

Trump: a body with consistency, a mind without it

In Trump’s chart, the body side, the physical, animal consistency of how he operates, has real definition. But the mind, the Ajna function that would normally give a steady, repeatable way of processing the world, is open there. Open centers and open channels are where a person carries the most flexibility and the most exposure to conditioning. Paired with a defined channel running through the willpower center, what you get mechanically is a design built for consistent action from the body, without a matching consistency in how the mind frames that action. That combination, steady body, open mind, defined will, is worth understanding on its own terms, apart from anything else.

Kennedy: a channel that runs underground

Kennedy’s chart, by contrast, is much simpler to read: mostly one significant channel, and it’s the kind where the two halves don’t sit at the same level of awareness. I call this a tunnel in class, because the activation is genuinely there and genuinely operating, but the person isn’t consciously tracking it as it runs. It shows up to their own awareness only when it surfaces, the way an emotional wave is present the whole time but a person only notices it once it crests. Day to day, this can just feel like a minor sensation in the body rather than something articulated in the mind. That’s the nature of design-side definition: real, active, and largely out of view to the person carrying it.

Schwarzenegger: definition layered on itself

Schwarzenegger’s chart is the more complicated case, and it’s a good one for showing what happens when several channels’ worth of activation start overlapping. Where Kennedy has essentially one piece of hidden definition, this chart has multiple channels stacking on top of each other, some fully doubled up on both the conscious and unconscious side, some only partially. The practical read is that this is a design with a lot of activation concentrated in the same territory of the chart. More overlap generally means more built-in consistency in that area, and also more going on for a student to untangle when they’re first learning to separate one channel from another on the same gates.

Why this matters for your own chart

The value of this exercise isn’t trivia about famous people. It’s training your eye to ask, for any channel in your own bodygraph, which side is carrying the activation and whether that access is something you can consciously track or something that runs underneath, out of view, until it needs to release. That distinction shows up constantly in how centers and channels actually function, and it’s a more useful question than whether a center is simply defined or open.

If you want the fuller read on how Trump’s whole chart is put together, including his type and profile, I’ve written about that separately in Donald Trump’s Human Design chart. And if you’d like to try this same exercise on your own design, pull up your free chart and see which of your channels run in the open and which ones run more like a tunnel.
