What are the Arrows on my Human Design Chart?

If you’ve ever looked at your Human Design chart and noticed small arrows near your Sun, Earth, and Lunar Node symbols, you’ve already met the Variable — without necessarily knowing what those arrows are doing there.

Each arrow points Left or Right, and each one is read from a different position in your chart: your Design Sun/Earth, your Design Nodes, your Personality Sun/Earth, and your Personality Nodes. Four positions, four arrows, each independently Left or Right. Left is the older, proactive, survival-tuned way of processing the world; Right is newer — a receptive capacity that works correctly only when it’s drawn out, not pushed.

Where Strategy and Authority are about Type — how you’re built to act — the arrows are about Awareness: how you’re built to think and take in the world. That makes Variable a separate layer of the chart entirely, and one worth knowing regardless of your Type.
