The Channel of Community and Your Relationship to Tradition

There is a channel in the chart that explains why so many of us stay loyal to family patterns, religious habits, or inherited beliefs long after they stop fitting, and why it usually takes something real, not a clever argument, to finally loosen that grip. That is the 37-40 channel, sometimes called the channel of community or the channel of the bargain. I want to walk through what it actually does, because it touches something close to universal in how humans relate to tradition.

Why This Channel Runs So Deep

The 37-40 is one of the most common channels in the population, showing up through the Sun, Earth, Nodes, or a passing transit in nearly every chart at some point. That is exactly why it matters. Ra taught that channels formed by centers in opposition on the wheel tend to describe something archetypal about being human, and 37-40 is one of three channels that carry the essential ingredients of our humanness. This one is about bonding through food, ritual, and loyalty. Busy, tribal, hungry for connection and for meaning.

Gate 37 is the gate of family. It carries an emotional need for loyalty and gives affection in return. Gate 40 is the gate of deliverance, and it is one of the three gates of aloneness. It works, sometimes to exhaustion, to earn the love and support of the tribe, and it can just as easily deny and shut the door when that support does not come. Together they form what Ra called the glorious and the profane: 37 reaching for the sacred, 40 doing the practical work of provision.

The Bargain Underneath Tradition

I think of this channel as the channel of bargains, because that is what it is built from. The first bargain most of us learn is the parent-child one: obey, and you belong. From there it extends outward into religion, culture, and tribe. Deals get made not just with each other but with God, however a person understands that word. Prayer, sacrifice, ritual meals, and communion are all forms of this same bargaining instinct, an attempt to secure belonging and provision through devotion.

This is also why gate 37 carries a real fear around tradition. It holds traditional roles because the role itself is the bond. Break the role and you risk breaking the bond. That is not weakness. It is the channel doing exactly what it is built to do: keep the tribe intact.

Seeking Versus Finding

It helps to compare this channel to its tribal counterpart, the channel of curiosity. That one is about searching, about the sacred searcher who keeps looking, stimulating others with new stories, never quite landing. The 37-40 is different. This is a channel of finding, not endless seeking. It resolves the search for meaning inside communion itself, inside the shared meal, the shared ritual, the shared belief. That is a large part of why so many religions center food and gathering. The bonding is the answer, not a byproduct of it.

What Actually Breaks the Pattern

Here is the piece I most want you to sit with. Ra pointed out that leaving a tribal or traditional structure almost never happens because someone reasoned their way out of it. It takes an event. Not necessarily a mystical one. It can be a loss, a rupture, a disillusionment, something that cracks the container open. Only then does the possibility of turning away from inherited tradition become real, and only then does the deeper search for one’s own individual nature actually begin.
