Breakdown of the Global Cross of Planning Cycle

Most people who learn about the Cross of Planning stop at the headline version: a tribal cycle that started in 1615, built our schools and corporations, and is now falling apart on schedule. That’s true, but it skips the actual mechanism. Underneath those two arms, the Cross of Planning is a full rotation through all eight locks of the G Center, each one paired with its own key, and the pattern of that rotation tells you far more about the world you were born into than the summary version does. This piece walks the wheel lock by lock, using the mechanics Ra Uru Hu laid out in Rave Cosmology.

If you haven’t read Current Global Cycles yet, start there for the visual reference: the crosses themselves, the two arms of the Cross of Planning (37-40 and 16-9), and the shift into the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix in 2027. This article assumes that ground and goes underneath it, into the eight-lock structure that produces both arms.

The Locks Live in the G Center, the Keys Move

The G Center holds eight gates that Ra called locks: 1, 2, 7, 10, 13, 15, 25, and 46. These are fixed. They don’t change with the precession of the equinoxes the way the rest of the mandala does. Half of them carry a love theme (10, 15, 25, 46) and half carry a direction theme (1, 2, 7, 13), and every other gate on the wheel takes its foundational trigram from whichever of these eight sits at the head of its section. That’s why the G Center functions like a web holding the entire Rave Mandala together. It’s the identity structure, the thing that locks each of us into embodying either love or direction as part of our own incarnation cross.

The keys are different. They’re the gates activated by the vernal point as it precesses backward through the mandala, and they rotate through the eight locks over the course of a full cycle. Picture it less as a circle and more as a spiral: the same eight doors keep reappearing, but a different key fits each one as the ages turn. Whatever key is currently seated in a lock becomes part of the global background frequency, the conditioning field every human being alive is bathed in regardless of their own personal chart.

Walking the Wheel: The Eight Pairs of the Cross of Planning

Since 1615, here is what has been seated in each of the eight locks.

Lock 13, Key 61. Since 1961 the vernal point has sat in Gate 61, the gate of mystery and inner truth. Ra himself carried this gate as part of his own incarnation cross, and it’s a large part of why occult knowledge, esoteric systems, and the hunger to know why have surged since the 1960s. Thirteen is the witness, the lock that stores our evolutionary history, and 61 is the key asking us to find truth at the deepest, most interior level available to us.

Lock 15, Key 16. Fifteen holds the extremes, the pattern of a society organizing around what it decides is worth building. Key 16 is enthusiasm and skill, oriented toward the future, and it is the gate that put the identification of talent and pattern at the center of the last few centuries. The first line of Gate 16 is false enthusiasm, delusion, and you can see that in how easily this era’s optimism about progress tips into overreach.

Lock 10, Key 9. Ten is behavior, love of the self. The key seated here, Gate 9, is focus, the taming power of the small. This is the pairing responsible for our obsession with detail. Around 1960 to 1961, the background frequency itself shifted from a sixth-line to a first-line emphasis across the whole wheel, and that’s exactly when specialists, subsystems, and hyper-detailed fields of knowledge exploded across every profession.

Lock 1, Key 32. One is the creative, direction looking forward. Its key, Gate 32, is duration and continuity, a conservative gate on a conservative first line. This pairing is a large part of why the last several centuries have been organized around capitalism, financial continuity, and the fear of failure that drives people to keep building and keep earning.

Lock 7, Key 62. Seven is the role of the leader, direction with and for others. The key here has been Gate 62, preponderance of the small, the gate of articulating detail. Ra himself activated Gate 62, which is part of why he could lay out the mechanics of Human Design in such granular precision. The leaders this era has produced and rewarded are the ones who can explain, in exhaustive logical detail, why something should be done. That template for leadership is not going to survive the shift into the next cycle.

Lock 2, Key 42. Gate 2 is where the magnetic monopole sits, the thing that holds your personality and design together and keeps you on your own trajectory whether or not you’re aware of it. Its key, Gate 42, is growth and increase, and it has been running at a first line of diversification. Ra pointed out that this key is effectively announcing the close of an era of human fertility. Declining birth rates fit this pattern: enough diversity has already been generated in the species to prepare the ground for what comes after.

Lock 25, Key 37. Twenty-five is innocence, the spirit of the self, unconditional and impersonal love. Its key since the 1960s has been Gate 37, the family, at a first line of mother and father. This pairing built the modern nuclear family and the institutions around raising children, and its breakdown (fewer households built around two parents at home) is one of the clearest visible symptoms of the era closing.

Lock 46, Key 40. Forty-six is the body temple, the determination to be born into the right place at the right time. Its key, Gate 40, is deliverance, the gate of aloneness and of earning love through work. Together, Gate 37 and Gate 40 form the Channel of Community, the tribal bargain: I will work and provide, and in return I get to belong. That bargain, corporate careers, pensions, institutions that took care of you until you died, is the piece of the Cross of Planning most people already sense is gone.

Lock People and Key People

Ra used to describe two kinds of agents within any given cycle: lock people and key people. A lock person carries one of the eight fixed G Center gates in their own chart. A key person carries whichever gate is currently seated as the key in one of those locks. Some people, like Ra, are both.

Ra’s own chart is a useful example precisely because he taught this material. He had Gate 25 as his own lock (his spirit), which made him a lock person there, and he carried Gate 61, Gate 62, and Gate 40 as keys, all three of them gates currently active in this closing era. That combination is a large part of why his own life’s work became the vehicle for articulating inner truth (61) in exhaustive detail (62) as a form of work and provision for others (40). Whether or not someone follows their own strategy and authority, carrying a lock or a key still makes them an instrument the program works through. It doesn’t require conscious cooperation, it just requires the activation being present in the design.

If you want to see where you sit in this pattern, look at your own chart for any of the eight G Center gates (1, 2, 7, 10, 13, 15, 25, 46) as your locks, and for 9, 16, 32, 37, 40, 42, 61, or 62 as your keys to this closing era. Carrying several of these is not a verdict on your character. It means the current global background frequency runs through you more directly than it does through someone with none of them.

How the Timing Actually Gets Calculated

The dates attached to these cycles aren’t arbitrary. They come from the precession of the equinoxes measured against the sidereal zodiac, using the Lahiri ayanamsa (the same offset used in Vedic astrology) to locate the vernal point. Right now that point is moving through the sixth line of Gate 55 on its way toward the exact shift, arriving there in February 2027. All four arms of the coming Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix sit in the sixth line: 55, 59, 34, and 20. That date lines up with something else worth knowing: it corresponds to Pluto’s return to the exact position it occupied when William Herschel first identified it as a planet in 1781, rather than mistaking it for a star, as it had been recorded centuries earlier.

It’s worth being precise about what these activations are and are not. The gates lit up by the precession are not part of your personal definition. Definition, in the strict Human Design sense, means two centers held in continuous connection through a channel in your own chart. A global cycle gate is activated in the mandala, not defined in your body graph, even when it happens to be a gate you also carry personally. These background activations shape the conditions everyone is living inside of. They don’t override your own strategy and authority.

Practical Takeaway: Living Inside a Closing Era

None of this is abstract weather happening somewhere out past your own chart. Every person alive right now carries the imprint of whichever locks and keys are seated in their own design, and every person alive right now is also living inside the shared conditioning of the Cross of Planning as it winds down. You don’t get to opt out of the background frequency. What you can do is recognize which parts of the current pressure toward detail, toward capitalism and continuity, toward tribal bargains around work and belonging, are the program moving through you, and which parts are actually your own strategy and authority speaking.

The practical use of this material is clarity, not dread about 2027. If you carry Gate 61 or Gate 62, notice how much of your drive to explain things in exhaustive detail is genuinely yours versus era-conditioning that is already starting to loosen its grip. If you carry Gate 37 or Gate 40, notice where the old bargain (provide for the tribe, earn belonging through work) still runs your decisions even when it no longer fits your actual design. Watching the mechanism doesn’t remove you from the cycle. It gives you somewhere solid to stand while the cycle finishes turning.
