Relating without Blame: Split Definitions and the Penta
The Human Design System Penta by JovianArchive
In this article we'll be taking a look at relating with awareness.
Functional relationships are at the core of what makes civilization work and what allows us to thrive in the many social processes that we get involved in throughout life. And given the nature of the world we are raised in, such relationships need to be fought for. They cannot be taken for granted, they are precious and rare. The legacy of the Not-Self that pervades cultural models, stereotypes and moral ideals include co-dependency, indebtedness, blame and fault-finding - and this is not what relating is about.
This article features valuable quotes not only from course material on split definitions from Ra, but also information from my BG5 Career and Business Consulting on the nature of the Penta.
The Penta is the group entity that determines group and family dynamics and therefore much of the household scenarios that form our early life conditioning.
In my experience as a Broad Split design, what I have seen along the way is the complex interrelation between the split definition that is prone to blaming and the emergent stress or toxicity from group fields (Pentas that essentially do not have the energy they need to be successful). These things come together to create dynamics of scarcity, blame and hurt that are unnecessarily personalized and internalized. It becomes a part of our Not-Self story and we carry it with us into any new context we enter into. When a new context is similar enough in configuration to our family of origin, this can be especially triggering and bring out a version of the Not-Self we thought we had left behind.
If you're unfamiliar with the Penta, further below I will describe concisely what it is and the implications it has for human society, community and households - after introducing the split definitions.
Relating Without Blame - Split Definitions and the Penta
The Broad Split
"It says, “Look, I've got this broad split. I need, I need to have this. It’s what I'm about. This is what I'm here to experience; this is what I’m here to learn. If you cannot give this to me, then this is not a relationship that is correct. If you cannot give me, as in this case, the intimacy, if you can’t give me these things, if you don’t give me the marriage and the bonds of the 19/49 or the romance (of the 39/55), if you can’t give me these things, it’s not going to work. And I don't need them all. But, if we are going to work together, this is what I need from you.”
This is not about saying to somebody that they are not correct. What happens to the not-self with these broad splits is that they’re always just simply blaming. And again, blaming in the context of bitterness, frustration, or anger instead of understanding that because of their very design, anyone who will bridge that split of theirs with that broad split is ready to hear what they need from them, because they’re already bringing it.
“This is what I need from you.” It goes deeper than that because I want you to really understand that this is not about dependencies. It isn’t. These broad splits, in all of their relationships, have big problems because they're always saying there's something wrong with them instead of saying there is something I need from you. There’s something you can give me. And in that, we can form a more perfect bond, because that’s really what it's about.
Until the broad split gets to that place where they can be comfortable in their skin, then looking out there and seeing that they’re not good enough and that they're not good enough is simply the conditioning mechanism, and in fact, they are good enough, can be, but you’ve got to let them know what you need.
Two sides of the split definition process:
The single bridge learns what it needs for its relating life and then educates its partner.
The broad split lets its partner know what it needs and then the relationship can flower.
This is the fundamental responsibility that is there in the split definition.
..
Everything about the split definition is that they're here to teach relating. But they do it in different ways. The [simple] bridge split says that you’ve got to be able to do this. The broad split says you’ve got to be able to give this.
We have an enormous problem in the nature of communion. Human beings operating out of mental authorities are full of fears. Relationships, whether they are going to succeed or fail, can be very threatening. There are all kinds of pressure that is attached to these things.
...
All the many, many years that I did readings—I've done readings for thousands of people who are divorced, separated, angry, frustrated, bitter, or disappointed, all of those things. Nobody teaches a child how to be correct. Nobody teaches adults how to be parents. Nobody teaches human beings how to be correct together in respect. Nobody teaches these things. They don't. And the teachers that we need are lost in the maia.
Imagine, the next time you see somebody, one of these people who tell you all about relating and how people should get along, you make sure that you get to check their data, because you'll see that they're usually single definitions and they don't know what the hell they're talking about. They don't. It’s only the split definition that’s really going to be able to make a difference in that. We need to be properly educated. We need to not be afraid to recognize who knows something.
...
If they’re not aware, then we're going to have nothing but problem relationships. Yet at the same time, you can see that it takes a great deal of awareness to be able to come to grips with your design as a split. It takes awareness. It takes real awareness to get past the traps of the bridges as conditioning traps to begin to see that this is what you're here to master and teach in the way of relating.
None of the rest of us, none of us single definitions, triple splits, quads—we are incapable of evolving in terms of relationships; incapable. It's not our responsibility. It’s not built into us. It puts enormous pressure on that 46% of humanity who are split definitions, because the responsibility then becomes theirs to make the relationships work. And of course, it goes back to what I began with. It is a very difficult thing. Only the split definition can see a relationship as bringing wholeness. Nobody else can.
...
If I'm ever going to give another training for relationship teachers, I will only invite splits. I won’t invite anybody else, because the reality is that they're the ones who have the gift and those gifts can be so special. A lot of it has to do with what it means to accept and be open to outer authority. This is something, when it comes to relationships, is often very difficult. Yet at the same time, to recognize that it is inherent in any split definition to be a true outer authority for what it means to be together and to be able to maintain the quality of our bonds. This is what they’re about."
- Ra Uru Hu (Excerpts from 'Split Definitions & Relationships' IHDS, 2009)
I'll start off by highlighting this bold statement by Ra: "None of the rest of us, none of us single definitions, triple splits, quads—we are incapable of evolving in terms of relationships; incapable." I'm not sure to what extent this is actually true. What does your experience tell you?
Personally, the split definition does stand out to a significant degree when it comes to healthy relating for me. The other kinds of definition don't appear to be very interested until they are educated in one way or another to see the value or until they make it a part of their spiritual or vocational path.
Yet, I have also seen single definitions who have worked very hard to relate with awareness and wisdom about the nature of giving and receiving from the other with clear communication. And as a young split definition there were many things I learned from single definitions for me to be able to relate correctly.
The limitation however, was that in most cases there wasn't the understanding of the mechanics at the time. And therefore much of the examples I saw looked like honourable attempts to forge a lasting bond, with the people involved learning a lot about not disrespecting oneself or the other, but they didn't actually work out as a functional relationship in the end.
Usually the single definition distorted their own nature to the point they got fed up with their partner. I've also seen a weird dynamic of "I'm not blaming you ( -but I'm blaming you)," emerge more than once. Which is almost as funny as it is sad.
When this was not the case and both people felt very content with themselves and the other, it was because they felt like they could be themselves and do their own thing without needing to compromise that. And yet, all of this is still categorically different from the mechanical nature of being a split definition and the outer authority this can lead to.

One of the reasons why relationships are difficult is that they can get very confusing rather quickly, and most of us want to do it right without knowing exactly what that means. The Not-Self doesn't only want to do it right, it wants to be in the right. It wants to win in the relationship, if you know what I mean. Whether it is by being really 'good', really 'bad' or really 'normal' - either way it wants to be victorious and is willing to pay a very high price for that.
Few people alive today grew up with parents who could role model for them what relating with awareness is like. One of the reasons for that (beyond not knowing their Designs) is that the moment you're together with both of your parents at the same time, or they're together with you, none of you can fully express yourselves. You're in a Penta. Parents may have a very different relationship that is available to them when they are alone with each other than when they are suddenly joined by their children. They may have a private relationship the children may never actually know about.
As soon as three people or more come together, the Penta takes over the social dynamics with only one goal in mind: to be a successful family (group) according to whatever societal / material model they espouse. It's about accomplishing the lifestyle and being able to demonstrate that success to other families, inevitably in a competitive way.
The communion that is possible between two becomes something else once we reach three. It was quite a shock for me to come to see this when I first studied the Penta, and recognized I actually didn't know who my parents were.
So what is a Penta?
Here's a quote from some of my BG5 Consulting work to explain the concept to clients:
The graph that you see above is called a PentaGraph, with its various structural components. It is the Design of the Penta as a Form, in the same way that we have a Human Design, or the various Designs of Mammals, Plants, Cells, etc., which are all different.
You can learn more about this in Ra's lecture series titled 'The Architecture of Life' in which he shares with us the Design of Forms.
At the BG5 Business Institute we use this graph to work with families, teams, communities, organizations in order to learn how to create a social and productive group organism that is functional and effective.
For this article, what is important to take note of are the empty spaces in the PentaGraph. As you can see, some boxes are colored in and some are left grey. These grey boxes are empty. Those that are colored in are the energies that the team members bring into the group field. These empty places are called 'Gaps'.
When a Penta has Gaps and is supposed to be a unit of its own, it generates a particular sense of scarcity in the field. The atmosphere and energy of the group becomes oriented around that scarcity and starts to focus on it. This in turn has an effect on the minds of the participating group members; their attention is hijacked to focus on 'what's missing' or 'what's lacking' and 'who is supposed to bring this in?'. And so this is what the mind will start to think about, and subsequently what everyone will start talking about.
When they can't find that energy, you can imagine the Penta becoming 'ill'. It starts to generate a kind of toxicity in the field that incentivizes the members to seek out the missing energy resources or competences. When acted out, this translates into toxic behaviour and communication. Most of the social dysfunction we see in society is a consequence of getting pulled into incomplete Pentas and being blind to their existence and conditioning influence on human beings. Like liver cells being blind to the fact that they are part of and determined by the liver as a transcendent whole.
Take the PentaGraph in the previous image as an example, you can see that they are missing four vital energies (which we call Skills in BG5). The skills at the bottom you might recognize as being associated with the 5th, 14th and 29th Gates in the Sacral Center. They are the generative power of a Penta, without them the group cannot hold together continuously nor attract the resources necessary to empower their creative direction. There's no sustainable lift-off of whatever vision they might have.
In a Penta these energies do not operate like Gates, their frequencies are modulated and they become something else within the construct of the Penta. Something that we can recognize as the productive energy flow of businesses (and material projects of all sorts) in which human beings come together to generate an income, resources or rewards.
This is the flow that families create. Generate the income that puts the food on the table, pays for the mortgages, pays for schools, pays for the car, the fancy clothes, etc. Assume responsibility for your role in securing everything a family 'should' have in order to be materially successful in the world, to be competitive enough so that its members can 'thrive' as part of society.
Communion goes out of the window here when the Penta can condition everyone to look at everyone else through that material lens. 'Are they upholding the model?', 'Are they fulfilling the role properly?'. And this is what opens the door to dynamics of blaming in the household when the Penta doesn't have the energy it requires. The mind thinks 'We can't seem to succeed in realizing the dream - whose fault is it?'
What I call a 'Blaming Atmosphere' is especially the case when there is a Gap in the Skill of Commitment. When this energy is lacking, the group is running on empty promises while nobody can actually follow through on their commitments. Among many other things, people start to make excuses and accuse each other for not putting in the necessary effort to make things work.
So now imagine what happens when we bring several split definitions into this kind of environment... They have a predisposition in the Not-Self to blame themselves and the other for lacking what is needed, and then this whole idea of 'blame' and 'fault' becomes amplified by the Penta and its scarcity conditioning. And eventually this becomes a cultural norm that is part of our lifestyle. It is a milieu we are raised in, it's something that we can take for granted as 'just the way human beings work'. It becomes an internalized part of our psyche.
And yet it isn't true - there is no awareness in blaming.
On the other hand, by respecting each others' Designs and understanding our context, we can speak transparently about what we perceive, about what we notice, about what is needed in order to make things work, and how scarcity could be overcome.
Free from expectations, free from blaming and fault-seeking. We can be unattached in a healthy way about actually 'achieving the model' or not.
We can be anchored in the present and with awareness have a healthy dialogue about our experiencing, about our learning, and navigate together moment by moment without disconnecting, disassociating or falling out into blind aggression, contempt or violence due to the mind's fears.
It all starts by understanding who you are, who the other is, who you are together and what context you're participating in.
It starts with awareness and the willingness to relate.

How Human Design Projector / BG5 Advisors Can Access Power to Achieve Career Success
This BG5 article is a continuation of a Career Type series written for the BG5 Business Institute that can help you comprehend your unique career type. We recommend you read the complete set to improve your communications with colleagues, clients, co-workers, and bosses. Empowering your inter-relational skills — by adjusting to the way each person is designed by his or her nature — yields optimum results in the workplace.
We are going to focus on the Advisor, the second most common of the four basic career types, and how we interact successfully with the other career types. Being an Advisor means advising others in their work. We need to get paid for the value we bring as specialists, teachers, mentors, and guides regarding a process or system we've mastered.
Knowing your career type gives you a straightforward tool for decision making. Career type shows you how to make choices you trust and use your precious energy in the right way, aligned with your natural strengths, talents, and gifts.
How to Avoid Human Design Projector / BG5 Advisor Career Type Pitfalls
Projectors Guide the Process
For all Advisers, the key thing to remember is that you do not have a consistent energy resource to generate worker-bee energy. You are not designed to go, go, go, go, go all the time. You have to pay attention to your body's need for breaks and rest. You are not designed to do all the doing yourself, but your mind may think that’s the solution. Unfortunately, believing your mind’s “I have to do this all by myself” thinking leads to burnout fast. The lesson here is learning that there is nothing wrong with your need to delegate or do things according to your timing.
Your success depends on having energetically healthy people around you who acknowledge your skills and offer you their energy resources to work with and to guide. When recognized, you excel at organizing and leading individuals, groups, and systems. You're here to see and connect with those who invite you to share what you know. It's hard to guide the process when you're caught up in thinking you have to do everything all by yourself. When others recognize your gifts and invite your advice on how you’re here to make things more efficient and effective, and you only accept the roles that are correct for you, you’re on the right track.
As a specialist working for short periods of time, through seeing the big picture and leading or guiding the process, you’ll taste the sweetness of success.
70% of the human population are Builders, so you may often find yourself trying to fit in or prove yourself to keep up with their go, go, go energy. The conditioning of being around so many Builders can lead you to push yourself into unhealthy states of exhaustion where your system can break down. If you're around people who are not healthy for you, you amplify the energy that can drain or weaken you. This situation can spiral downwards into all kinds of health issues.
If you're an adviser, your success depends on having energetically healthy people around you and leading and guiding the process when you’re recognized and then invited. You have the brilliant ability to bring people together and to maximize energy and resources. Remember that it's vitally important to take time to rest when needed in order to remain healthy. The most important thing for you to learn is extreme self-care.
Because so much of the world are Builders, you can often find yourself trying to live in their reality, trying to keep up with their energy. The myth of having to keep up can lead you to become a kind of super slave and cause you deep resentment. Pushing yourself can lead you into unhealthy states of exhaustion, where your system can start to break down.
If you're so focused on being seen for something you think you know, it can keep you from not allowing others to recognize you naturally. Sometimes you might find that you're struggling so hard to be appreciated that you may begin to be known for something out of integrity with your design’s natural gifts. For example, you might want a promotion and the only way you think you can get it is to be a super hard worker, wearing all the hats and doing everything yourself. When you feel sour at being passed up for a promotion and you think, “Why don't they see how hard I work?” oh boy, are you way off track! Bitterness is how you know that you're that trying too hard at something that is not your correct job.
Give advice only when you’re recognized and invited in order to guide others to do the doing in the most efficient, effective way possible. Learn to delegate! That's one of the most important solutions for you to remain healthy.
How to Recognize the Human Design Projector / BG5 Advisor Career Type
You can usually spot the Advisor by their intense gaze, intent focus, or penetrating stare. They’re usually studying something, and have an impressive global awareness. Some Advisors know a lot about many things, but once they find their passion they can be like Aspergians — super-focused on a particular area of interest.
Advisors are the most diverse of the career Types. There are many different decision-making strategies within these three sub-types of Advisor: Mental, Classic, and Energy Advisors. (We’ll go more into how to discover which kind you are in our free webinar training, stay tuned!).
All Projectors / Advisors have this in common: the Energy Resource (Sacral) is not defined, and there is no definition of any of the energy functions to the Communication and Action Function (Throat).
Most Advisors delight in being asked for what we see in terms of the big picture, how things fit together, and how things can be made for efficient or effective. We love being valued and appreciated for our perspective.
For Advisors, recognition is a two-way street. As an Advisor, you need to learn to trust the mechanics of your focused and absorbing presence. Relax into the knowing that you are designed to be seen and recognized.
You are also intended to see and acknowledge others. You work best when you can focus in on one person at a time, where you can focus on who they are and share what you see.
Just as you're designed to see and recognize others, so are you created to be seen and appreciated by others naturally. When you trust the subtle mechanics of your design, you open yourself up to truly hear the recognition and notice the invitations of others; that's where the magic happens for you.
Be your shining Self. There is nothing you need to "do” because who you naturally are as a guide for the other is enough.
How Human Design Projectors / Advisors Best Communicate for Maximum Efficiency
How to Communicate as a Human Design Projector
Next time you are about to be in interaction with others, give this a try. Let go of expectations, open up your awareness, listen quietly and wait for that recognition and invitation. You may feel your whole body light up with recognition in return through what you see and know. You may be amazed at what others sense and what they recognize in you because we Advisors have a hard time seeing ourselves accurately.
As clear communication is key to the achievement of success in guiding others, here are some helpful tips on communicating with the other career types. These are simple strategies that can help you elevate your ability to communicate effectively. Using these little tips to communicate correctly with each of the different career types can create better results both personally and professionally.
Manifestors - the Innovators
Innovators need to be kept informed of their impact. Generally, the thing that really interests them is, “How can I make my mark in the world?” What they really want is to operate in peace and get things moving into action. So keep the Innovators in your life informed of things that impact their ability to do their job, and if they are your boss, co-worker or partner, keep them informed of things they are responsible for that impact your ability to do your job. Experiment with what it feels like to wait for them to initiate you into conversation or action unless you have a relationship where they've given you an open invitation to approach them.
Generators - the Builders
Builders are designed to respond. When you ask Builders simple questions that are not multiple-choice, but a direct yes or no, you're going to get the most authentic answer from their guttural response. You might hear "Ah huh," for a yes or "Uhn ahh," for a no, or "Hmmm." If it's a, "Hmmm," it's either no for right now, or you may need to ask the question again in a slightly different way. Manifesting Generators /Express Builders are more articulate and tend to skip steps. Pure Generators/Classic Builders need a step by step process of activity. Reading the response of a Builder is the way to know if they have the energy to complete the task or not. See what it feels like to wait for them to approach you first, and be sure to ask them back to confirm they have a response towards what direction or action they want to take.
Projectors - the Advisors
With fellow Advisers, it's all about recognition and invitation. When you authentically recognize the skills, talents, and abilities of an Adviser, and invite them to share what they see, this is where they truly shine. You can gain profound insight and see things that you may have otherwise overlooked simply by recognizing and inviting the Advisers to share.
Reflectors - the Evaluators
For the Evaluator, initiate them by including them according to how you see them fitting into the big picture. Keep them apprised of what you see their role being because often they can lose track of what their role should be. Evaluators like to belong, be involved and included, and they are wonderful for displaying how things are going when they are at the center of the business.

How to Taste the Sweetness of the Human Design Projector’s / Advisor’s birthright, “Success”
As an Adviser, the signpost of being on track is the sweetness of success. That feeling of success happens most often in the simple act of by being recognized and invited. Nothing feels better to an Adviser than being recognized for our gifts, talents, ways of seeing things.
Being asked to share, lead, or guide within the system that we have mastered is one of the most wonderful sensations for us. Being recognized and invited is what truly allows an Adviser to shine. We are naturally designed to be seen and to encourage others.
When we can get out of our own way and not try to push or force things, we are typically highly visible and designed to be valued for our mastery of systems.
What does the Human Design Projector’s / Advisor's strategy of “Wait for Recognition and Invitation” feel like?
Here are some answers from Advisors in their own words:
“Recognition and invitation feels like relaxing into a space of deeply trusting... Trusting that when I have patience, when I show up in my light, the correct opportunities truly come to me. It’s taking time to shift into operating this way but it’s certainly much calmer and more gratifying.” Colleen Arneil, Mental Advisor, Listen to What You Say with Others
“It feels like being a kid on the playground, doing your own thing, then getting picked by someone you like to join their team in a game. ” Shaadi Oreyzi, Energy Advisor, Wait for Clarity“When it's working, it feels like home. Like I am centered, sturdy and purposeful.” Simone Outteridge, Classic Advisor, Instinctive Knowing
“It feels solid and powerful yet at the same time very natural and unforced, simple and clear.” Richard Seidman, Energy Advisor, Wait for Clarity
“I’m learning more and more about being in the right place. Invitations happen naturally then. Whenever I feel the energy shift, the invitations start flowing.” Julie Lynn, Energy Advisor, Wait for Clarity
”Strategy and Authority works because it make me feel seen, my voice is heard, I begin to flow at ease and effortlessly.” Rose Osman, Energy Advisor, Instinctive Knowing
”You can feel when the exchange is able to flow. Either a direct invitation to offer advice or a more subtle karmic energy flow.” Lisa Maree Akhurst, Mental Advisor, Listen to What You Say with Others
Two Helpful Human Design Projector / BG5 Advisor Keys for Maximum Success
All of us broadcast our energy in unique ways. Each one of us has a simple signpost that will immediately let us know if we are delivering static, or producing clear communication.
How do you know if you’re on the right track or not? How do you know if you’re off track? When it comes to using your energy correctly, owning your uniqueness, communication and what you’re broadcasting, an essential guidepost for each Career Type helps us know when we’re on track and when something’s off.
Human Design Projector / BG5 Advisor On-track: Success
How do you know if you’re transmitting static or clear communication? The simple answer is if you’re feeling seen and understood, you’re on track. Each Career Type has a signpost of how that consistently shows up. For us Advisors, we call this “Success.”
What does Success feel like? From the Advisor’s perspective:
“For a long time I used to think of success in terms of awards, money, accolades. But I’ve learnt that having those doesn’t necessarily mean feeling deeply fulfilled. For me there is truly nothing sweeter than seeing others have major breakthrough moments because of perspective I have offered in their journey and feeling their deep appreciation for it.” Colleen Arneil, Mental Advisor, Listen to What You Say with Others
“To me, it is when other people benefit from my insights and appreciate the skills that I bring to the table. Success becomes an internal reward and sense of accomplishment for helping others.” Shaadi Oreyzi, Energy Advisor, Wait for Clarity“When someone benefits from what I like to do most. And also when I feel seen, that others are sincerely interested in what I have to say or do. I can also feel success when I'm just having fun all by myself or when I find a simple solution to one of my 'problems.’” Saskia Baardman, Energy Advisor, Wait for Clarity

Human Design Projector/ BG5 Advisor Off-track: Bitterness
If you sense you’re not being clearly heard or understood, that your words are falling on deaf ears or no one is seeing or appreciating your advice, you’re off-track. One of the gifts of knowing your Career Type is owning the signpost of being off-track. Bitterness is a signpost that you’re attempting to guide without a go-ahead from the other person or your decision-making strategy.
Advisors don't necessarily recognize that bitterness right away. When Advisors are deeply conditioned, they're lost in the land of frustration, trying to get all the doing done and burning themselves out. When we don't get recognized and acknowledged for our perspective, for what we know and how to make things better, we feel unseen, unvalued, unappreciated. When we are overlooked or left out, it leaves a bitter taste that's hard to swallow.
What does Bitterness show up like and when? From the Advisor’s perspective:
“Bitterness tends to show up as griping, complaining, negativity, and downright bitchiness. Sometimes it takes several days or even weeks for me to realize that I’m being a negative nelly about something and that’s when I realize that there isn’t a correct recognition in what I’m griping about and will take a look at what needs to change or if I just need to exit stage left and leave the situation all together.” Nathalie Marie-Collins, 2/4 Energy Advisor
“Bitterness at its most extreme feels like a bubbling cauldron full of resentment, annoyance and agitation that I’m not recognized or appreciated for what I have to offer. It also has a loneliness flavor to it ... that I’m not seen or understood for the genuine support I have to give.” Colleen Arneil, Mental Advisor, Listen to What You Say with Others
“Bitterness feels like a brick wall. Choked up and unable to speak. Loneliness, an internal reclusiveness, sadness and frustration.” Lisa Maree Akhurst, Mental Advisor, Listen to What You Say with Others“Bitterness for me is when I am not living by my true essence. When I do things my soul doesn't recognize as my purpose.” Petya Petrova, Classic Advisor, Instinctive Knowing
“Bitterness feels like I don't matter, that I'm not seen, that my contribution is ignored and doesn't count.” Simone Outteridge, Classic Advisor, Instinctive Knowing
“Bitterness is feeling like getting the short end of the stick. Win/lose instead of win/win.” Tobias Inti Obermayr, Mental Advisor, Listen to What You Say with Others“Bitterness to me has two different forms. The first was before I knew I was a Projector. I had no idea that bitterness was a direct result of not being invited. I would help others and often I would feel as if I was a vampire attempting to cross a threshold uninvited. I would be energetically repelled. Complaints, sadness and/or resentment were how my bitterness would present. Now that I am aware of what to look for, bitterness has a more off-putting, gut-wrenching feeling for me that is accompanied by full body nervous tension energy. When I recognize my mistake, the feeling eases up but still sticks around for a bit.” Sami Johnson, Energy Advisor, Wait for Clarity

How Do You Know Your Ideal Work Identity and Direction?
"What is my ideal role at work?" No matter your design, Human Design can answer this question as a piece of the puzzle that helps to clarify your career path. Understanding your Identity and Direction from the Human Design for Business framework brings self-empowerment and helps you recognize how you are here to share your direction and identity at work. Acceptance of your strengths or recognizing your shadows here has the potential to generate your/your team’s identity and lead your team in a successful direction.
In the Human Design System, one of the primary ways we describe how a person is designed to operate is through what we call Centers and their Functions.
These Functions and their Shadows are two of the 16 Success Codes we analyze to determine the most direct path to success for you as a unique individual. You can find out how all your Functions operate by ordering a Full Human Design Career Analysis Success Code Report and taking a look at Success Codes 9 and 10. The Functions that define your consistent strengths are revealed in Success Code 9.
There are nine Functions in your career design, which are a key aspect of how you operate.
One of the key elements to look at when analyzing someone’s BG5 Career Design is how an individual can best utilize each of their nine Functions. At the core of your Career Design is the Identity and Direction Function. This Function gives you profound insights into how you are uniquely designed to express your role individually or in groups as a transmitter or receiver of the possible directions we are designed to travel in work and life.
Success Code 10 shows us Functions as “Shadows and Distractions.”
These shadows can be your biggest decision-making pitfalls. But with awareness, they can become your greatest source of wisdom and potential profit. In this Human Design System article, we will cover how the Identity and Direction Function can operate in a fixed way (listed under Success Code 9) and how it can function in a flexible way (listed under Success Code 10 as “Role Confusion”).
Your Human Design Identity and Direction Function:
Can determine the role you’re here to play
Gives you a clear sense of Self
Guides generation and manifestation of individuals and teams
Holds six characteristics that are essential to small business success
The key for the Identity and Direction Function in either code 9 or 10 is to act in agreement with your Decision-Making Strategy. You can reference Success Code 3 for more information about your personal Decision-Making Strategy. Your Decision-Making Strategy is the way you are intended to make the right decision at the right time. Making choices you trust with confidence leads you to a better quality of life and improved bottom-line.
Human Design for Work Success Code 9:
Identity and Direction Function—Having a Fixed Role At Work
When "Identity and Direction" is listed under Functions on your Human Design Career Map, you have a fixed and defined personality, and you have the ability to lead, even change the direction of others. You may find it helpful to look deeper into the characteristics or strengths that originate from this function to get a better sense of what your role is in a small group.
Rejecting your personal role that comes naturally to you can result in loss of self-confidence and fulfilling your unique potential. Being able to clearly recognize when it’s time to follow your path and let others follow theirs can be a relief. Too many people are caught up in the suffering that comes from trying to be successful at what they are not designed to be fulfilled by in their career. The seduction of what your mind thinks is important can lead you down that path; if you regularly feel frustrated, bitter, angry or disappointed it’s a sign that you made a wrong turn and it’s time to get back on the path that’s right for you.
Human Design for Work Success Code 10:
The Shadow & Distraction of Role Confusion
If your Identity and Direction Function shows up instead as Role Confusion under Success Code 10, it means this function operates inconsistently for you. The good news is that your design in an organization could offer the perfect solution when:
Someone needs to step in and evaluate the direction
Someplace needs to be assessed for its appropriateness for an event
Flexibility is needed when dealing with different strong personalities
On the flip side, your sensitivity to place can distract you, and you may tend to:
Be confused about your role
Feel uncomfortable and need to change places
Continually change directions, causing instability
The flexibility your Identity provides you the ability to adroitly adapt to varying characters or paths in life, trying on different roles, hoping for the right fit. If this search is obsessive and determines your decision-making, it could undermine your success. Your gift is that of the consummate chameleon and can make a remarkably talented actor. You tend to be able to get along with many different kinds of people and the friends you have may not necessarily get along with each other.
For some people, not knowing what to be is a strong theme. It is essential in this case for you never to give authority over what your role is to anyone else. When you take on the wrong role, it’s like wearing a suit off the rack as compared to a custom-tailored piece that fits you perfectly.
No matter the configuration of your Identity and Direction Function, you are perfectly designed as you are. Remember you have certain areas that are actively energized and fixed while others are open to experiencing the myriad possibilities and potentials that you can learn from and grow wise about over time. Your greatest shadows have the greatest wisdom potential, and in fact, your greatest profit potentials as well.
Human Design can lead you to a successful life filled with satisfaction, doing what you love.

How to Transform Stress and Pressure into Fuel for Success
Stress. Like death and taxes, we can’t escape it. The good news is, there is a way each of us is genetically wired to deal with and handle stress appropriately. You can transform the pressure we experience into fuel for you and your business’ successful evolution.
"Which works better, competition or cooperation? The answer, without equivocation, is cooperation. Although most people are surprised by this, scientists have repeatedly verified it in hundreds of studies since the late 1800s." Perry W. Buffington, Ph.D.
We live in a deeply pressurized business world. We are conditioned to believe that business must be fraught with high-stress, cutthroat competition and success must manifest a certain way or it isn’t worthy. However, there is room for everyone to succeed in the way each are designed to best fulfill their purpose. BG5 shows us the way to guide everyone on the path of success they deserve. Would you like to learn how you can transform stress and pressure into the fuel for success?
In BG5, one of the primary ways we assess a person based on how they are designed to operate is through what we call Functions. Functions and their Shadows are two of the 16 Success Codes we analyze to determine how you are here to be successful. You can find out how all your Functions operate by ordering a Career Map or the Complete Success Code Report and taking a look at Success Codes 9 and 10. The Functions that define your consistent strengths are revealed in Success Code 9.
Functions that are absent from Success Code 9 are listed under Success Code 10 as their "Shadows and Distractions." These shadows can be one of your biggest pitfalls yet, with awareness, can become your greatest source of wisdom. Let's discuss how the Drive and Stamina Function can operate in a fixed way (listed under Success Code 9) and how it can function in a flexible way (listed under Success Code 10 as “Always In A Hurry).
This image (left) shows the nine Functions in a person’s career design. One of the key elements to look at when analyzing someone’s BG5 Career Design is how an individual can best utilize each of their nine Functions. At the root of your Career Design is the Function called Drive and Stamina. This Function gives you profound insights into how you are uniquely intended to best handle the stress and pressure inherent in life and work.
Your Drive and Stamina Function:
Provides adrenalized fuel for ambition, beginning new projects, tasks, and teams
Creates hormones that get and keep you moving at work and play
Energizes you for turning chaos into order, creativity, emotional and survival intelligence
- Carries a profound initiating force that can fuel success or failure for your business
Utilize this fuel wisely, or you risk adrenal fatigue. The key for any Function listed in either Success Code 9 or as a Success Shadow in Code 10 is to act in agreement with your Decision-Making Strategy. Your Decision-Making Strategy can be found in Success Code 3—this is the way you are intended to make the right decision at the right time. Making choices you trust with confidence leads you to a better quality of life and improved bottom-line.
Success Code 9: Drive and Stamina Function—Processing Stress In A Fixed WaY
If your Drive and Stamina has consistent energy present, you have a particular, fixed way of dealing with stress according to your unique genetic imprinting. It could be that you require daily physical activity to discharge stress, or you may need to vent through regular emotional releases or to channel that energy into creative endeavors.
Your BG5 career report analysis can provide further details, and as your BG5 Career Consultant, I can synthesize your entire design in relation to your life and work experience to help guide you to the best ways you are designed to cope with the stress of work and life.
The good news is that you tend to have a reliable way of discharging stress that works for you. Having this be a Function for you means you are more stress resilient. This could show up as:
More likely to withstand the stress of external time-pressures (others can’t rush you)
You are able to focus on and cope with complex tasks that require stamina
- You can be good with time-management and setting/meeting deadlines
When your Drive & Stamina functions consistently, there also could be a tendency to put pressure on those around you, especially if they're inconsistent in this area—it causes them to hurry all the more. Without awareness of your Decision-Making Strategy to guide you, you may:
Become obsessive
Improperly initiate new projects
- Create resistance that brings unnecessary stress
Stress is one of the leading causes of disease, and improper stress management can undermine your health. Follow your Decision-Making Strategy and Authority to move forward in life grounded in correct action that can lead you to a better bottom line with less stress.
SUCCESS CODE 10: SHADOW & DISTRACTION—
ALWAYS IN A HURRY
If your Drive and Stamina Function shows up instead as "Always In A Hurry" under Success Code 10, this fuel operates inconsistently in you. The good news is that your design in an organization can offer the perfect solution when:
Short-deadline, urgent projects arise
Something needs doing very quickly
Flexibility is needed when dealing with time-pressures
On the flip side, a sensitivity to those time pressures and stressors can distract you, and you may tend to:
Unconsciously over-amplify pressure
Rush around on autopilot
- Hurry needlessly to get rid of stress
This tendency to amplify pressure is why your Drive and Stamina Function appears as one of your Shadows. Does being in a constant hurry tend to distract you from what is critical in your work? Do you tend to push quickly through doing things you don’t need to rush, even things you enjoy doing?
When you have the Drive and Stamina Function listed as a shadow, you have the flexibility of learning to deal with stress in many different ways. In rare instances, It may also show up as not knowing when to hurry at all. However, external energy can activate you with immense pressurization, which tends to amplify and distort this powerful energy. This pressure can show up as:
An inability to focus when you need to
Uncontrollable restlessness
- Physical tension or emotional stress
You may experience an enormous range of pressure over your lifetime - from deep stillness to extreme hyperactivity. Letting pressure pass through you that is not your own is important. Nature is an especially helpful place of renewal and peace for you.

When you feel stressed-out, you may find it very helpful to:
Breathe deeply
Walk outside for some fresh air
Find a quiet place to meditate
- Listen to some music
Take a break or move away from the source of stress, particularly if it is a person. Conversely, if the situation calls for it and you can handle the sensation, you could take a deep breath and utilize that pressure to get things done quickly.
Get familiar with the pressures you have consistently within you and recognize the source of stresses in your environment. Following your Decision-Making Strategy aligns you to the perfection of your process and can help you keep your balance despite work's constant stresses. There is an enormous profit potential in this Function—if it’s right for you to harness the fuel of Drive and Stamina and capitalize on the wisdom found here.
The Drive and Stamina to Fuel Success

Whether your Drive and Stamina Function is a dependable source of energy or an area of distraction and potential wisdom, you cannot make decisions based solely on stress because of the way the pressure can get in the way of seeing things clearly. For this reason, we recommend you follow your Decision-Making Strategy to deal with and move on the right pressures at the right time. This is critical to avoiding the resistance of frustration, bitterness, anger and disappointment in your career and business. Moving forward correctly, from a calm and focused with joy for living encourages proper initiation of your purpose. An action begun correctly from a place of confidence in the appropriate timing facilitates an enjoyment of the process along with success. Correct timing of action and not over-doing it on coffee can also help protect you from adrenal fatigue.
BG5 can lead you to a successful life filled with satisfaction, doing what you love. For a deeper understanding of this Function stay tuned to our focus on Drive and Stamina in upcoming case studies, celebrity profiles and webinar workshops in future BG5 specific blog posts.
