How Your Design Type Shapes Your Relationship Patterns
Your type changes how a relationship actually feels, from the pull toward someone different from you to the four ways two BodyGraphs connect. A look at type, angles, and connection mechanics together.
Before you ever get to gates or channels, your type is already shaping how a relationship with anyone, romantic or otherwise, is going to feel. Not because type predicts who you’ll end up with, but because it sets the terms of how you’re built to engage in the first place. A generator’s aura works differently than a projector’s, and two people with different auras coming together is a different experience than two people with matching ones. That’s worth understanding before you go looking at anything more specific in a chart comparison.
The pull toward what’s different
There’s a genetic reason most of us feel pulled toward people who don’t share our definition. It has nothing to do with taste and everything to do with the survival of the species: bodies are wired to be attracted to what they’re not, because that’s what keeps genetic diversity alive. Right now, in most of us, that shows up as a real pull toward someone whose chart is different from our own.
That won’t always be the dynamic. As Ra taught it, once we’re no longer driven by that genetic imperative, the pull shifts toward sameness, toward a like-with-like resonance. You can already feel a version of this if you’re close to someone who operates a lot like you do: there’s a comfort in the shared experience, even without any of the electric “opposites attract” pull. Neither pattern is wrong. They’re just different mechanics, and it helps to know which one you’re actually in before you read too much meaning into either.
Angles: resonance and harmony as the bridge
Every profile carries an angle, and the right angle is reliably drawn to the left angle, the same way a defined center is drawn to an open one. The two are genuinely different: a right angle profile is running a personal destiny, while a left angle profile is out looking for the people and situations it needs to interact with. When those two come together, what makes the difference workable is whether there’s a bridge.
That bridge is either resonance or harmony. Resonance is a shared profile number, a 1/3 and a 5/1 sharing that 1, for instance. Harmony is the softer version: a 2/4 and a 5/1 don’t share a number, but the 2 and the 5 sit in the same relative position across the lower and upper trigram, so they still connect. Without either one, two people can find the differences between their angles genuinely hard to bridge. It’s worth treating this as one more thing to notice in a relationship you’re already in, not a filter for deciding who’s worth getting close to. Strategy and authority still come first, every time. Type second. Angles third.
Centers, and the four ways charts connect
Comparing centers is the next layer: which centers are open in both of you, which are open in one and defined in the other. A shared open center, like the solar plexus, can create real attraction alongside real friction, simply because the two of you are processing that part of life so differently.
From there, two combined charts create connections that don’t exist in either person’s chart alone, the same way adding a transit changes how your own design behaves for a day. Ra described four ways this shows up:
Companionship happens when a channel is defined between you through any combination of conscious and unconscious gates. You share the consistent experience of that channel together, which is where a lot of real friendship lives.
Dominance happens when one person has a defined channel and the other has nothing there at all. The undefined person gets to experience how everyone else experiences that energy in the defined person, without any static of their own getting in the way. It sounds like it could be a downside. In practice it’s often one of the more interesting parts of a relationship, a place to learn something you couldn’t learn on your own.
Compromise is the one that can feel the hardest to live with. One person carries the whole channel, and the other carries just one of its two gates. That single gate gets absorbed into the other person’s full definition, so the person holding one end rarely gets to express it on its own terms. The relationship is not wrong because of it. There is simply a spot where one of you is consistently carried by the other, and knowing which spot it is makes it much easier to stop taking personally.
Electromagnetics is the one everyone gets excited about: a gate on each end of a channel, completing it between the two of you and creating definition that exists nowhere else. That’s the attraction-and-repulsion charge, the “can’t live with them, can’t live without them” pull some manifestors describe. For more on what that combined definition actually creates, see the piece on the quantum composite.
The love gates, briefly
There are ten gates in the BodyGraph associated with love, and they split into two categories. The transcendent love gates, 25, 15, 46, and 10, form a cross of universal love: someone with these gates active loves in a way that reads as genuine but not personal. They’re capable of real warmth toward you without it being about you specifically, and trying to force that into something exclusively personal tends to backfire. The personal love gates, including 10 (which also carries a transcendent role), 44, 28, 58, 40, 41, and 55, each carry their own flavor: self-love found through being loved, love that senses shared success, love proven through correcting what’s wrong, love earned through providing, love expressed through fantasy, love that genuinely doesn’t know what it feels until it feels it. None of this is a scorecard. It’s a way to understand why the same gesture of love can land completely differently depending on whose chart it’s coming from.
