Right-Right and Left-Left: Two Opposite Ways to Be Fed by Your Environment
A closer look at the two most opposite Variable storylines, right-right and left-left, and why one is defined by surrender to environment and the other by what it does.
Of the four Variable storylines, right-right and left-left sit at opposite ends of the spectrum. One is built entirely around receptivity, taking a life in through the environment rather than acting on it. The other is built around activity, where what a person does with their time is the very thing that defines them. I taught these as two separate videos on the same day because they make the most sense side by side. Understanding one clarifies the other.
The Right-Right Storyline: Observer and Peripheral
If both of your Variable arrows point right, you are living what I call the yellow storyline: Observer on the design side, peripheral perspective on the personality side. This is the most receptive of the four combinations, and it’s oriented toward the nine centered future we’re moving into rather than the seven centered, strategic way of life that built most of our current institutions. That matters practically, because it means a right-right life is also the most conditioned of the four. Our schooling, our job descriptions, the whole strategic, left-dominated way we’re taught to earn a living, none of it was built with this storyline in mind.
A right-right being takes in an environment far more deeply than sound and sight. The processing is sensitive enough that it’s closer to taking in frequency than simple sensory input. That’s why activity itself is close to beside the point for this storyline. What a right-right person does with their time doesn’t define them the way it does for a left-oriented person, and there’s no requirement that the activity be demanding or high pressure. If you’ve got right-right paired with an undefined or open root center, that person is genuinely not built for a high stress job with hard deadlines. Relaxed, low pressure surroundings aren’t a preference here. They’re correct for the mechanics.
The real work of this storyline is surrender. Not passivity in the defeated sense, but trusting strategy and authority enough to let life come to you rather than chasing it. When a right-right life is lived correctly, what shows up in that peripheral awareness is something nobody else can see, because nobody else is built to take it in the same way.
The Left-Left Storyline: What You Do Defines You
Left-left is close to the opposite. Both arrows point left, active on the design side and active on the personality side, and the keynote is observed and focused. This is my own storyline, and the mechanic is direct: what you do with your time and energy genuinely defines you. Not just in the sense of a job title, but as the literal filter through which you see the world. Your focus becomes your lens.
That has a real consequence. If you’re living a left-left storyline and what you’re doing isn’t fulfilling, you don’t get to just sit with that and wait for it to resolve on its own. Something has to change, and often the environment has to shift first before the right focus can even become visible. I’ve lived that shift myself, moving out of activity that wasn’t correct for me and into work that actually reflects my focus, and the difference in how life feels was not subtle. Being observed doing something aligned is nourishing for this storyline in a way that’s specific to it. Being observed doing the wrong thing, or being in the wrong environment while you’re doing it, tends to produce isolation rather than the connection this storyline is actually built for.
Why Environment Means Something Different for Each
Ra taught that environment isn’t a location so much as a quality, and both of these storylines make that clear from opposite directions. For a right-right being, the environment is the whole point. It’s the thing being taken in, the thing that nourishes. For a left-left being like me, environment isn’t where the meaning lives at all. What matters is the activity and the focus that comes out of it. I can tune out my surroundings almost completely once I’m doing the thing I’m meant to be doing.
Neither of these is a personality quirk. They’re mechanical differences in how a nervous system is built to process a life, and mistaking one storyline’s correctness for the other’s is one of the quieter forms of conditioning I see. A right-right person pushed to prove themselves through constant activity is being asked to override their own design. A left-left person told that their doing shouldn’t matter, that they should just relax and let things come to them, is being handed advice that was never meant for their storyline.
Finding Where You Actually Fit
If you don’t know your own Variable arrows yet, you can pull up your chart for free at /free-chart and see which pairing you were born with. I’ve written a broader overview of all four storylines if you want to see how right-left and left-right fit alongside these two, and the full Variable page walks through how these arrows work together with digestion, environment, and perspective as a complete system. Whichever pair you carry, the goal is the same: let your strategy and authority show you what’s actually correct for your storyline, rather than borrowing someone else’s definition of a life well lived.
