Where Your Human Design Chart Comes From

A companion guide to Ra Uru Hu's early American lecture: the neutrino stream, the two crystals, the 88 degrees before birth, and why he asked no one to believe a word of it.

The first thing Ra Uru Hu tells this audience is that nothing he is about to say requires their belief. I love that opening, and after decades in this work I still think it is the correct one. This lecture comes from Ra’s first visit to America, and in it he lays out the whole architecture of the system: where the chart comes from, what the two calculations are, and what it actually means to have something defined in you. Consider this article your map to what he covers.

The Neutrino Stream and the Program

Ra begins with physics, because that was his own background and because the system was given to him as a logical mechanism rather than a set of stories. Stars produce neutrinos, and in staggering quantities: trillions of them pass through every one of us, every second, near the speed of light. The detail that matters is mass. Once science established that neutrinos carry an infinitesimal mass, the picture changed, because a particle with mass that passes through you leaves an imprint. Friction, as Ra puts it.

This is his explanation for why a birth calculation works at all. Picture the neutrino stream pouring in from the whole star field, and picture a planet like Mars sitting in its path. The stream passes through the planet, and the planet, as a mass, alters the stream before it reaches us. The planets act as filters on the information we are all bathed in. Ra calls this ongoing celestial weather “the program,” and every one of us is in it. And the imprinting runs both ways: the stream that passes through you is changed by you and carries your information back out into space.

The Passenger, the Limousine, and the Driver

To explain what receives all this information, Ra tells a story about consciousness. Each of us carries two crystals of consciousness and a magnetic monopole. The personality crystal, seated in the head, manifests who you think you are. The design crystal, seated in the ajna, manifests the body, your biogenetic vehicle. The magnetic monopole, seated in the sternum, holds it all together and connects you to your trajectory through life, your geometry.

His analogy is a limousine. The body is the vehicle. The magnetic monopole is the driver, and it already knows the route. The personality, the one we spend our lives identifying with, is only the passenger in the back seat. Most of our suffering, in Ra’s telling, comes from the passenger trying to grab the wheel.

One Synthesis, Four Ancient Roots

The chart itself is a synthesis. Around the outside of the wheel sit the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, each built from six lines, and Ra points to the striking parallel with genetics: the genetic code runs on exactly 64 codons, each a three-base sequence drawn from a four-letter alphabet. Four to the third power is 64. The wheel and the genome arrive at the same number from opposite directions. Inside the wheel sits the zodiac, humanity’s oldest attempt to read the potential of personality. The nine centers of the bodygraph come out of the chakra tradition and map to the glandular system, and the channels that run between them echo the Tree of Life, describing how energy transforms as it moves from one center to another.

Ra is careful here: the synthesis stands on its own. It borrows the language of these older systems while describing something none of them describes alone.

Two Birthdays in Every Chart

Every chart is built from two calculations. The first is made for the moment of birth, and it describes your personality, the conscious side of you, printed in black. The second is made for a point 88 degrees of the Sun before birth, roughly 88 or 89 days, which Ra describes as the moment the personality crystal enters the vehicle. That prenatal calculation, printed in color, is your design: your biogenetic inheritance, the unconscious themes carried down through your genetic line. You will never watch yourself operating this side, but everyone who knows you well has seen it. This is why he says the chart offers the most efficient access to the unconscious that a practitioner can have.

Definition: What You Can Rely On

When a channel has an activated gate at both ends, the channel and its two centers color in. That is definition, and Ra’s core teaching in this lecture is blunt: what is defined in you is consistent, and it is the only thing in you that you can rely on. Everything else is open, and the open centers are where the program and other people reach you. An open center carries enormous potential for awareness, and Ra insists there is nothing broken about one. He offers himself as the example: an open emotional system that spent 38 years amplifying everyone else’s waves, until he learned to feel it move through him without calling it his own. The moment you stop identifying with what comes into your openness, it turns into insight about the people around you.

He also gives the awareness centers their frequencies. The mind works in all time, endlessly revisiting. The spleen speaks once, only in the now. The emotional system moves in a wave, and clarity only comes when the wave has settled.

When the Program Opens a Gate

The most memorable stretch of the lecture is the piano story. A boy with a hanging gate has the other end of the channel of talent opened by Pluto for nearly three years, discovers music, thrives, and then one morning Pluto moves on and the passion simply leaves. Nothing went wrong. A connection closed. The same mechanics run through our relationships: another person’s activations can complete your channels, define your open centers, and make you feel wonderful, whether or not they are good for you. Ra’s point is that when you can see these connections, you stop inventing reasons for why your life keeps changing shape.

If you have never seen your own two calculations side by side, you can run your chart for free, and when you are ready to explore what your definition is made of, start with the nine centers and the channels that link them.
