The 13 Planets

♆ Neptune

What is hidden. Neptune is where the fog is, which is also where the art is, and telling those apart is the work of a lifetime.

Neptune carries illusion, art and spirituality — and Rave Psychology names it misinformation, which is the same faculty described unsentimentally. What cannot be seen clearly can be imagined, and imagination is both the source of art and the source of being comprehensively wrong.

It is the oceanic body: fog, mystery, ideals, the non-ordinary and the mystical, altered states, dreams and vision. It is also the search for redemption, the taste for sacrifice and martyrdom, and the dissolving of the sense of being separate — the loss of whatever is old or no longer true. In a chart it is where the longing for spiritual oneness sits, along with the love of music and the arts. The same placement rules cults, addiction and the willingness to sacrifice a life for a belief. There is no version of Neptune that is only the good half.

Because it moves so slowly, Neptune is generational: whole cohorts share the same fog, which is precisely why it is invisible to them.

What it looks like in a chart

In an undefined center. The conditioning here is on-again, off-again, and it marks where a person is most likely to fall for a delusion. It is a common place to go looking for altered states — including through drink and drugs. When Neptune transits the channel it can bring either disillusionment or a genuine experience of unity, and the two can be hard to tell apart from inside.

In a defined center. Neptune adds a dimension of imagination to the defining channel — or confusion, or a susceptibility to feeling victimised in that center’s theme. The person often experiences it as depth rather than as obscurity.

In a defined channel. Neptune may dissolve outmoded habits. It brings a dreaminess, and it can mean the person carries a spiritual or a delusional quality in that particular definition. It also marks where a sacrifice may be asked for.

Four names for one body

The same body is read differently depending on the layer you are working in, and readers arrive holding whichever vocabulary they learned first. These are columns of a single reference, not rival schemes:

  • Human Design: Illusion, Art & Spirituality
  • BG5: What’s Hidden
  • Rave Psychology: Misinformation
  • PHS: Hydration

The last of those is also its function in the Design Lunar & Planetary Square, the eleven-body map of the physical vehicle.

Exalted and in detriment

Every planet has a tone in each gate and line — a condition where it works well and one where it works against itself. Neptune has twenty-nine exalted positions and eighteen in detriment across the wheel. These are the themes, not a lookup table: the specific reading depends on which gate and line it lands in, and that is what an analyst reads.

Exalted, it tends toward:

  • Psychic attunement, and an awareness that grows on its own
  • Charismatic genius that dissolves old forms
  • Art for art’s sake — a simplicity with no use for elaborate ritual
  • Dedication in obscurity, needing no audience
  • Honest recognition of an inadequacy, and the vanity that gets purged with it

In detriment, it tends toward:

  • Self-delusion, and an impressionability deep enough to be dangerous
  • Living in a fantasy world until promises start breaking
  • Dissolution mistaken for depth — degeneration, with disastrous results
  • Impermanence taken as proof that nothing means anything
  • Irrational rejection, followed by regret at one’s own severity

Where it is right now

Neptune is moving through a gate as you read this, and it is conditioning everyone at once — which is exactly what makes it noticeable if you know what to listen for. See the current transit, and Neutrino News for the daily read of the whole field.

Frequently asked questions

What does Neptune mean in Human Design?

Neptune carries illusion, art & spirituality. Neptune carries illusion, art and spirituality — and Rave Psychology names it misinformation, which is the same faculty described unsentimentally. What cannot be seen clearly can be imagined, and imagination is both the source of art and the source of being comprehensively wrong.

What is the difference between Neptune in Human Design and in astrology?

Human Design reads Neptune mechanically rather than predictively: it describes a fixed feature of the design, not an event that is going to happen. The same body is also read four ways depending on which layer you are working in — Illusion, Art & Spirituality in Human Design, What's Hidden in BG5, Misinformation in Rave Psychology, and Hydration in PHS. Those are columns of one table, not competing systems.

How long does Neptune stay in one gate?

About 2.6 years in a gate — 165 years for a full circuit, roughly fourteen years per sign. A Neptune transit to any one placement is a once-in-a-lifetime event, if it happens at all.
