Health & The Body

Bioindividuality: Where Functional Medicine Meets Human Design

There is no average human body. The science of bioindividuality, the story behind my root-cause health work for women at laveenaarchers.com, and why that work and the Human Design System were never two separate practices.

If you found me through Human Design, you may only know half of my work. There is a second shelf with my name on it, at laveenaarchers.com: three books and a cited research library on root-cause health for women, written for readers who may never have seen a bodygraph in their lives. Students ask me regularly how the two connect, and whether the health work is a departure from the Design work. The honest answer is that they were never separate. Both stand on one principle, and it has a name: bioindividuality.

This is the long answer I have been meaning to write for a while: what bioindividuality actually means, how I came to stake my own health on it, what I built at laveenaarchers.com, and why functional medicine and Human Design belong inside one practice.

What bioindividuality actually means

Bioindividuality is the observation that there is no average human body. Your anatomy, your biochemistry, your nutrient requirements, your responses to food, medicine, exercise, and stress are individual, and the range between healthy people is far wider than most of us were ever taught.

The idea has serious scientific roots. In 1956 the biochemist Roger Williams, the researcher who discovered pantothenic acid and named folic acid, published Biochemical Individuality, a book that cataloged just how much variation hides underneath the word “normal”: healthy stomachs, hearts, glands, and nerve pathways so different from one another that the textbook diagram represents almost no one, and nutrient needs that differ many-fold between healthy individuals. His conclusion was radical then and remains under-applied now: medicine and nutrition are calibrated to a statistical composite, and that composite walks into no clinic.

Modern research has kept proving him right. Pharmacogenomics shows the same standard dose of a drug being metabolized quickly by one person and slowly by another, with completely different outcomes. Microbiome research has demonstrated that two people can eat the identical meal and produce opposite blood sugar responses. Chronobiology shows the same fast, the same workout, the same sleep advice landing differently depending on the body clock running it. None of this is fringe; it is the direction the science itself is moving, away from the average patient and toward the actual one. I keep the receipts for claims like these in the article library at laveenaarchers.com, where every claim that rests on research links out to the paper it came from, so you can check me instead of trusting me.

Here is why this matters so much to me as a teacher: generic health advice fails people mechanically, and then those people blame themselves. The protocol that transformed your friend leaves you exhausted, and the story you get handed is that you lacked discipline. Bioindividuality says something kinder and more accurate: the protocol was written for a body, and it was never yours. I wrote about the chart side of that failure in The Six Pillars of Health; this article is about the whole picture.

I learned it in my own body first

I entered health work thirty years ago as a medical massage therapist and personal trainer, long before I had a chart or a lab account. Then my own Uranus Opposition arrived, and my body became the curriculum: chronic pain, migraines, crushing fatigue, and eventually a stack of labels that included Hashimoto’s, SIBO, gut dysbiosis, acid reflux, and fibromyalgia.

I did what we are all trained to do. I took the labels to the professionals and followed the protocols. The protocols were written for the average patient, and I have never been her. My own licensed practitioner eventually ran out of road and referred me onward, and I understood that I would be navigating my own case.

So I studied, the way a 3/5 studies: by trying everything and keeping what survived contact with reality. That road ran through five doctorate programs in holistic medicine and board certification by exam as a Doctor of Natural Medicine, a Doctor of Holistic Functional Medicine, and a Doctor of Functional Nutrition, followed by ongoing training in functional labs, minerals, and the microbiome that I think of as my residency. I will say here what I say everywhere, because transparency is the whole ethic of this work: I am not a medical doctor, and my work is education.

The turning point came when I reran my own labs from the year I was first diagnosed, this time with trained eyes, and caught what had been missed. Iodine was the door, and root-cause work was the house behind it. With radical changes to my nutrition, my environment, and my rhythm, the symptoms that had run my life for years resolved one by one. I have told that story in more detail in my board certification post and in my writing on autoimmunity.

And Human Design was there through all of it. My first full analysis, in 2013, went as far as the Primary Health System, and I have been teaching the system since 2014. My chart explained the part the labs could never touch: why the standard advice cost me so much in the first place. I am a Projector, and every “push harder, train more, grind through it” program I was ever handed was written for a body with an energy supply I do not have. Human Design was teaching me bioindividuality years before I had the word for it.

The work at laveenaarchers.com

What lives at laveenaarchers.com is the health half of my practice: root-cause health for women, with the sources shown.

The books. Three so far:

  • Bad Medicine Blues: The Natural, Root-Cause Approach to Women’s Energy, Hormones, and Vitality (2025) is the flagship. It carries my own story and the system I rebuilt my health with: looking upstream of the symptom checklist to the nutrient, hormonal, and environmental drivers underneath it.
  • The Good Years: A Woman’s Guide to Healthspan, Strength, and Longevity in Midlife and Beyond treats midlife as an era to build for on purpose, with strength, hormones, and healthspan as projects a woman can actually run.
  • Your Body’s Own GLP-1: A Woman’s Guide to Weight, Hormones, and Appetite in the Weight-Loss Drug Era takes the most talked-about biology of the decade, satiety signaling, and shows what your own body already produces and what supports it.

The library. A growing archive of cited articles on women’s hormones, energy, and metabolism, where every research-based claim links directly to its source. That standard is the point. Wellness publishing is full of confident voices and empty footnotes, and I refuse to add to the pile.

The tools. A free companion workbook and quick-start checklist, a free chapter of Bad Medicine Blues, and access to practitioner-grade lab testing and supplements for the women I work with directly.

The through-line of all of it is a sentence I gave one of my schools when they featured my story: “In a sea of cookie-cutter wellness, mine is customized and systemic.” Customized, because of bioindividuality. Systemic, because chronic dysfunction never has a single villain: nutrition, minerals, microbes, stress, environment, history, and timing weave together, and untangling them takes a systems view rather than a supplement of the month.

Human Design is bioindividuality with a map

Functional medicine and Human Design begin from the same premise and approach it from opposite ends. Functional medicine works empirically from the outside in: history, labs, response to change. Human Design begins from the inside, with a mechanical description of your differentiation, calculated from your birth data, that describes the operating conditions your body was built for.

Read that way, every layer of the chart is a bioindividuality claim:

  • Your Type describes how your aura engages energy: whether sustainable life-force is yours to spend, yours to guide, yours to initiate with, or yours to sample and reflect. Most burnout I see began as a Type mismatch years before it ever reached a lab.
  • Your Authority locates where a yes and a no actually form in your body. You run it as an experiment and watch what happens, and what most people watch happening is their body making better calls than their mind ever did.
  • The nine centers map onto glands and organ systems, which is where the Design gets unmistakably physical. I wrote years ago about the Throat Center and the thyroid, a connection I then lived out in my own Hashimoto’s years.
  • Beneath all of it sits the Variable layer, home of the Primary Health System: your Determination, the way your body is built to take in food and information; your Environment, the physical setting your body heals in; and the Perspective and Motivation your awareness runs through. I walked through all six health layers one by one in The Six Pillars of Health, and the fine grain of Color and Tone lives on my substructure page.

Ra Uru Hu kept the priority blunt: “The body is the life.” The chart is documentation of that body, your body, down to a level of specificity no questionnaire reaches. And for readers who love the long view of history, the idea that the heavens carry a map of the body is many centuries old; I compare the classical tradition with Human Design on my medical astrology page, and I keep the two carefully distinct.

The why and the how

In practice, the two halves of my work divide the labor cleanly. Human Design gives me the why: the operating conditions a particular body was designed for, where its energy comes from, how it digests, where it decides, what setting it settles in. Functional medicine gives me the how: labs that show what the years have actually cost, nutrition and lifestyle work that rebuilds, and markers that tell us honestly whether the rebuilding is working.

Some pairings from practice, kept general on purpose:

  • Determination and the labs. Determination tells me the fueling rhythm a body was built for. The labs show what decades of the opposite rhythm have cost, and where restoration starts. The same intermittent-fasting protocol that rebuilt one woman’s metabolism can erode another’s, and the chart says in advance which body is which.
  • Environment and the nervous system. Environment names the physical conditions a body stops bracing in. You can watch stress physiology ease when a woman finally stops white-knuckling a setting that was never hers, and no supplement replicates that.
  • Authority and the protocol. When a protocol changes, the decision goes back through the client’s own authority, run as her own experiment. The follow-through problem that haunts every wellness practice mostly dissolves when the yes came from her body instead of from me.
  • Open centers and where to look first. The open centers show me where conditioning presses hardest: an amplified emotional field, pressure to prove, chronic hurry. Those pressures carry biochemical price tags, and knowing where to look first saves months of guessing.

This is the marriage I described when my functional medicine school featured my story: Human Design provides the why, the blueprint underneath a life and its cycles, while functional medicine provides the how, the actionable labs and resets. Neither one alone was enough to get me well. Together they gave me back my health, and then they became my work.

One practice, four doors

So why separate websites? Audience and evidence standards. There are four doors into this work now, and each room is built to its own standard.

This site teaches the Human Design System: the mechanics, sourced from Ra’s original teaching and written freshly in my own words, for people already in the experiment or ready to begin it, along with the certification path for those called to practice.

laveenaarchers.com carries the health work: root-cause health for women, the books, and the cited library, held to the standard of the published literature, for readers who may never run a chart and who deserve a research trail for every claim about their hormones, energy, and longevity.

HumanDesignBusiness.com applies the Design to work itself: business readings, career design, and what a chart means for how you earn, lead, and partner. If bioindividuality governs how your body heals, it also governs how your work life runs, and that application deserved its own room.

Laveena.ai is the newest door: an AI trained on my own teaching corpus that writes out your full chart in my framework, including the health layers of Determination and Environment, and answers follow-up questions against your own design. I am building my published health writing into its corpus as well, so the Design teaching and the health teaching can meet in one conversation.

One house, four doors, and this article is the hallway between them.

There is also a timing to it. The larger cycle I write about on my 2027 page describes a world moving from tribal, collective structures toward individual differentiation, and health is exactly where I watch that shift land first in real lives. Averages served the tribe. What comes next runs on self-knowledge, and every one of these doors exists to hand you yours.

Where to start

If you arrived from the Design side and health is calling:

  1. Run your free chart if you have not yet.
  2. Read The Six Pillars of Health, the written guide to the six mechanical health layers of your chart, with my free live webinar attached.
  3. If you want your whole chart written out today, Laveena.ai delivers a full reading in my framework, health layers included, with follow-up chat.
  4. When you want the deepest layer read live for your own chart, that is my Primary Health System reading.

If health is the urgent front and you want the research first:

  1. Start at laveenaarchers.com with the free chapter and the companion workbook.
  2. Pick your book: Bad Medicine Blues for energy, hormones, and the root-cause method; The Good Years for midlife strength and longevity; Your Body’s Own GLP-1 for weight and appetite in the current era.
  3. Browse the library when you want the sources themselves.

And if you are here wearing your entrepreneur hat, the business application of all of this lives at HumanDesignBusiness.com.

Most of my long-time students eventually move through several of these doors, and that is the design of it. My banner on every property is the same four words: be your own authority. The mechanics on this site and the citations on that one exist for one reason, so that you can be.

Everything here is educational, on both sites. Nothing in this article, my books, or my readings diagnoses, treats, cures, or prevents any condition, and none of it substitutes for your own licensed healthcare provider. I am not a medical doctor; my role is education, and I keep the sources visible so you can verify what I teach.
