The Six Pillars of Health: A Complete Guide (Plus a Free Live Webinar)
Type & Strategy, Authority, Determination, Environment, Perspective, and Motivation: the six mechanical pillars behind why generic health advice fails, and how the Primary Health System reads each one in your own chart.
I’m teaching a free live webinar called The Six Pillars of Health, and before I stand in front of a room and walk through it live, I want to give you the written version here. This is the long-form guide: what each pillar actually is, where it comes from in your chart, and why “eat this, not that” advice was never going to work for you the way it works for someone else.

Why generic health advice fails
Every diet, every wellness protocol, every “just do this every morning” routine is written for an average person who does not exist. It has to generalize, because it’s mass-produced. The trouble is that your nervous system, your digestive rhythm, your ideal environment, and what genuinely gets you moving are not average. They’re mechanical, chart-specific facts about you, and Human Design is the only system I know of that reads them directly instead of guessing.
That’s the whole premise of the Primary Health System: your body came with an owner’s manual, and most of us were never handed it. The Six Pillars are that manual’s table of contents.
The Six Pillars, at a glance
I teach health as six layers, moving from the most foundational mechanics of your chart down into its deepest, most specific layer:
- Type & Strategy — the aura you run and the correct way to move through the world in it
- Authority — the actual decision-making center in your body, not your head
- Determination — how you’re built to digest food and information
- Environment — the physical and social conditions your body needs to run correctly
- Perspective — the lens your awareness is framed through
- Motivation — what’s genuinely driving you, versus what you’ve been conditioned to think should drive you
The first two are the ones most people learn first, and if you’re new to Human Design, start there. The last four come from a deeper layer of the chart called the Variable, and that’s where this webinar spends most of its time, because it’s the layer generic health advice has no access to at all.
Pillar one: Type and Strategy
Your Type determines the shape of your aura and, with it, your Strategy: the one correct way for your particular aura to initiate action in the world without generating resistance. A Generator waiting to respond, a Projector waiting for recognition and invitation, a Manifestor informing before acting, a Reflector sampling a full lunar cycle before committing: none of these are personality quirks. They’re aura mechanics, and living against them is the first and most common way people burn out their own health before they ever get near a diet plan.
Pillar two: Authority
Authority is where the decision actually gets made in your body, and for most people it isn’t the mind. It might be a Sacral gut response, an Emotional wave that needs time to move through you, a Splenic instinct that speaks once and doesn’t repeat itself, or one of the other authorities. Chronic stress and burnout very often trace back to the same root cause: decisions made from the head, overriding the body’s own correct authority, again and again, for years.
Type and Authority are the foundation. Everything below this is the part almost nobody teaches.
Pillar three: Determination
Determination comes from your Design Sun and Earth, the two activations that, physically, map most directly onto your brain and nervous system. Ra Uru Hu’s own teaching on this, in his Radical Transformations lectures, is that Determination describes a genetic predisposition toward one of two very different operating modes:
- Active (Left) brains run hot and need regular fuel. Skipping meals is genuinely costly for this design; a consistent eating rhythm is not a nice-to-have, it’s structural.
- Passive (Right) brains need meaningfully less food to run well, and can actually be harmed by the “eat every few hours” advice that works for an Active design.
This single distinction alone explains why the same intermittent-fasting protocol can transform one person’s energy and wreck another’s. It’s also where “digestion” widens beyond food: this same brain system processes information and people the same way it processes a meal, so what you feed your mind and who you spend time with follow the same Active/Passive logic as what you put on your plate.
Read further on my Variable page for how this Tone-depth signal (called Determination) relates to the deeper Color-depth reading of the same chart position, which is what my Primary Health System reading decodes specifically for your own chart. At its deepest layer, this pillar’s Color spectrum runs from Appetite to Light — from needing dense, regular fuel at one end, to bodies that thrive on comparatively little at the other, extending all the way to the more unusual solar and light-based practices some people are genuinely built toward.
Pillar four: Environment
Environment comes from your Nodes: the axis Human Design calls “the breath of life.” Where Determination is about your body’s internal operating system, Environment is about the external conditions that let that system run correctly, the physical and social setting your body is actually designed to be in.
This shows up in your chart as themes, seasons your life passes through rather than a single fixed answer, and it changes emphasis across your first and second forty years. Some of it will show up in your definition; some of it won’t, and that’s expected. The Nodes are always present in a chart even when they’re not “activated” in the way gates and channels are.
At the Color-depth layer this pillar’s spectrum runs from Caves to Shores: from environments of density, enclosure, and concentration, to open, expansive, horizon-facing settings. Neither end is better. The question is only ever which end is correct for your own design, and most people have simply never been told to ask.
Pillar five: Perspective
Perspective comes from your Personality Nodes and describes something more fundamental than what you notice: it describes how your noticing itself is framed. Ra Uru Hu made this distinction precisely: this pillar isn’t about the content of what you’re looking at, it’s about the frame the looking happens inside of, whether your attention is naturally Focused, narrow and sequential, or Peripheral, wide and contextual.
At Color depth, this pillar’s spectrum runs from Survival to Personal: from an awareness oriented around the immediate safety and continuity of the group, to one oriented around individual wellbeing and personal enterprise. This is one of the clearest places where the larger historical shift described below shows up in a single chart position.
Pillar six: Motivation
Motivation comes from your Personality Sun and Earth and describes the mind’s operating mode: Strategic, a proactive, planning mind that moves first, or Receptive, a mind that functions as a resource, most powerful when it’s responding to what’s already in front of it rather than generating its own agenda. Our culture overwhelmingly rewards the Strategic mode and shames the Receptive one, which means a huge number of people with Receptive minds have spent years thinking something was wrong with them for not “just deciding” and driving forward the way they were told successful people do.
At Color depth, this pillar’s spectrum runs from Fear to Innocence: from being driven by tribal survival fears, to being driven by something closer to spiritual awakening and the plain innocence of being exactly who you already are. Of the six pillars, this is the one most directly tangled up with conditioning, because what looks like “motivation” from the outside is very often just fear wearing ambition’s clothes.
The bigger arc: why this matters more in 2027
I don’t teach these six pillars as an isolated self-help checklist. They sit inside a much larger movement I’ve been tracking for years: a generational shift from tribal, collective structures of support toward individual self-empowerment, playing out across every one of these pillars at once. It’s visible in Environment’s move from dense cities toward open land and distant shores. It’s visible in Perspective’s move from group survival toward personal enterprise. It’s visible in Motivation’s move from inherited fear toward self-acceptance.
This is the same current running through my writing on 2027: a background frequency that has organized human collectives for a very long time is dissolving, and something more individually differentiated is taking its place. Health, in that context, stops being about compliance with a generic system built for the tribe, and starts being about correctly operating your own, specific design. The closing note I always give my students on this material is the simplest one: the actual work is self-acceptance. Your Human Design is the map of your own uniqueness, and authenticity, not optimization, is the key that makes all six pillars work together.

Everything above is the map. The webinar is where I put it to work: I’ll walk through all Six Pillars and how the Primary Health System runs through each one, then do a live chart interpretation so you can watch the mechanics apply to a real person in real time, with time afterward for your own questions.
I’m running it twice so more time zones can catch it live. Register once and you’re set for either session, and if neither time works for you, you’ll get the replay.
