Free Sessions, Self-Doubt, and the Conditioning Underneath

Why practitioners give their work away, why self-doubt feels so old, and how both trace back to the conditioned authority installed in our first seven years.

On the surface, these are two very different conversations. One is practical advice for practitioners: stop giving your sessions away. The other reaches much further back, to the doubt that was already living in you before you turned seven. Underneath, they are the same conversation.

Both are about what happens when somebody else’s voice becomes the authority on what you are worth. When you undercharge, overgive, and let clients walk all over your calendar, that voice is running the show. And it has been running the show for a very long time.

Stop Giving Your Work Away

I hold deep respect for my clients. I see each one as a partner, a collaborator, a companion on the journey who happens to be a little further behind me on the road. Maybe the gap is only three and a half years. Maybe you are six, seven, or ten years into your own experiment. Whatever the distance, respect them, and make sure you are respected in return.

That second half is where so many practitioners fall down. Respect flows both ways, and yours has to be protected with real boundaries.

If somebody is constantly not showing up, start charging ahead of time. I had to do exactly that. If your free strategy sessions go on and on, and people seem to take advantage of you, look closer at what is actually happening. Most of those people never schemed against you. You were simply too kind. You gave them all the answers in the free call, so they never needed to book a session. They already had what they came for.

So stop doing free analysis sessions and free coaching sessions. That was never the only way to get to know people. And please, do not blame them for your inability to hold a boundary and say no. That part belongs to you. I learned it the hard way, and I would rather you learn it from this page.

Where the Doubt Was Installed

Here is the deeper layer. If you still blame other people for your mistakes, or you keep making decisions that lead you into frustration, anger, bitterness, or disappointment, take a good look at yourself. This is the process of coming to grips with what it is to be you.

And when you look at yourself, do the very best you can to look at your parents. Not everybody can, unfortunately, because it is one of the most extraordinary things to see: the nature of the conditioning that brought you into your life. Anyone who was present in your first seven years was establishing a conditioned authority in you, moment by moment. A voice that would later sound like your own while it doubted you, discounted you, and told you what your work could be worth.

And this business of conditioning granting authority goes far beyond parents. It continues moment by moment, day by day, right now.

Which means right now is also where it can change. You are your own authority. You can make these decisions. If something does not feel right inside, you do not have to do it. Allow yourself to be your own authority, and allow others to be their own.

That is what the free-session trap and the old familiar doubt have in common: both dissolve as you take that authority back. This is slow, honest work, and it is exactly what the deconditioning process describes. If you want to see where your own openness invites that conditioning in, start with your free chart.
