Ten Steps to Working by Design

A practical walk through what your type, definition, profile, and open centers actually reveal about how you're built to work, partner, and get paid.

Most career advice assumes everyone works the same way and just needs better habits. Human Design starts somewhere else entirely: your bodygraph already tells you how you’re built to operate, who you’re built to operate with, and where your energy naturally turns into value. I taught a live coaching session walking through ten of those markers one at a time, using my own worksheet format. Here’s the walkthrough in writing.

Your Type Tells You Your Working Form

The first step is simply operating according to your genetic potential, which means knowing your form. Projectors are built to guide, ideally through a chain of command rather than working alone or in a crowd, waiting for recognition and invitation before stepping into the big roles. Reflectors are the most different of all: their only consistency is the lunar cycle, and many find small groups uncomfortable while a large group, or working solo or in partnership, suits them better. Manifestors don’t belong in groups. They’re built to inform before they act, so that the people around them are prepared to be impacted rather than blindsided. Generators, who make up most of the population, respond and wait for that pulse of energy before committing, and their satisfaction is tied directly to productivity and profitability. None of this is a rule to obey on faith. Experiment with it, try it, and see how it actually plays out for you.

Your Definition Shapes Who You Work Best With

Definition, the way your activated centers connect, tells you your genetic working style. Single definition means you can work autonomously and don’t need another person present to access your own energy. Split definition (I have a basic split myself) means partnership tends to complete something in you, so it’s worth experimenting with strategy and authority to find the right partner. Triple split people generally need to move through a wider variety of people rather than staying locked in the same small group day after day. Quad split, which is rarer even than reflectors, tends to run on strong preferences for particular people. Knowing your definition before you walk into a team, a partnership, or a solo venture changes what you’re actually optimizing for.

Solo, Partnership, Small Group, or Large Group

A lot of business pain comes from entering a group context you were never built for. It helps to look at four contexts: working independently, working in partnership, working in a small group of up to about five people, and working in a large group of ten to sixteen or more. Certain channels in the bodygraph, connecting the throat down to the sacral and ego area, are associated with functioning well in a large group and can point toward roles with more earning potential there. A separate set of channels sits between the throat and the sacral center and marks capacity for a small group role. If you have activations outside those specific channels, being locked into that context can be genuinely draining. None of this is a guarantee that a given group is the right one. It’s information to test, not a verdict to follow blindly.

Your Profile Is the Brand of You

Your profile, the two numbers after the dot on either side of your chart, is your life’s costume: the way you’re here to move through and fulfill your work. Thinking of your profile as the brand of the business that is you can be a useful reframe. Over years of experimentation, most people find the body leads and the mind lets go of running the show, which is really the whole point of Strategy and Authority as an ongoing practice rather than a fixed conclusion.

Where You’re Open Is Where You Make Money

This is the part people tend to skip past: your open, undefined centers are often where your profit potential lives, because openness is where you develop wisdom about a subject through repeated exposure to it. An open head can turn into making money through the questions you raise. An open ajna can mean you become deeply, hard-won certain about a topic precisely because you started out uncertain. Open awareness centers, the solar plexus, spleen, and ajna, tend toward selling insight gained through direct experience of emotional waves, safety and security, or conceptual clarity. Open motor centers, the root, heart, and solar plexus again, often turn into work around stress, self-worth, or emotional steadiness, since you’ve had to learn wisdom about them the hard way rather than broadcasting them automatically. A defined center, by contrast, is something you deliver consistently and can be relied on for. Neither is better. They’re just different economic engines.

Try It Before You Build a Career On It

Every step here comes with the same instruction: experiment, try it, and see if it’s true for you before you restructure your working life around it. A quick reference like this can act like training wheels, a starting point rather than a finished map of your whole bodygraph. If you want to go further, running your own chart through our free chart tool is the natural next step, and you can dig deeper into how your specific type and authority show up in decision making, or explore your centers to see exactly where your own profit potential sits.
