Human Design as a Synthesis: Why It Borrows From Four Traditions and Belongs to None

One of the questions I get most often from new students is some version of “wait, is this astrology? Is this the chakras? Is this Kabbalah?” And the honest answer is that Human Design uses pieces of vocabulary and structure from all of those traditions, and it is none of them. Ra Uru Hu built something new out of borrowed scaffolding, and understanding which parts are borrowed and which parts are original is one of the clearest ways to stop confusing this system with the ones that came before it.

I teach this as the synthesis, because that’s really what it is. Four older bodies of knowledge, each contributing a piece of structure, assembled into something that functions completely differently from any of them on their own.

The I Ching gives us the hexagrams, not the readings

The 64 gates in your bodygraph come from the 64 six line hexagrams of the I Ching, the ancient Chinese Book of Changes. Each hexagram is built from an upper and lower trigram, solid (yang) lines and broken (yin) lines, and every hexagram sits exactly opposite another one in the wheel, its polarity. Ra used this structure and wrote his own commentary on it, the Rave I Ching, which reads as part poetry and part dictionary. It’s genuinely dense material, and I spend real class time helping people translate it into plain language.

What people miss is that the six lines within a hexagram have relationships to each other. All first lines across every hexagram resonate with each other. Lines one and four, two and five, three and six harmonize within a single hexagram, because of how the trigrams stack. That structural logic is inherited from the I Ching itself. What Ra did with it, mapping those hexagrams onto the gates and channels of the bodygraph, is entirely his own.

Astrology gives us the calculations, not the meaning

This is the one that trips people up the most, so I want to be direct about it: Human Design is not astrology, and Ra did not build his gate meanings from astrological symbolism. What we do share with Western astrology is the math. We use the same planetary positions, the same round wheel divided into twelve segments, and the same birth moment as a starting calculation.

The real difference is that we calculate twice, not once. Alongside your birth (conscious) chart, we calculate your design (unconscious) chart from roughly 88 degrees of solar movement before you were born, which is roughly three months prior. Astrology generally works from a single chart. We also reference the earth as a point in the calculation, which most Western astrology doesn’t place on its wheel at all. The chakra system gives us a shape, not our centers

You will notice the Human Design bodygraph looks like it has chakras stacked down the body, and it does share ancestry with that seven center Vedic system. But we are working with nine centers now, not seven, and the shift matters. Ra taught that humanity crossed from a seven centered form into a nine centered one around 1781, roughly the same period astronomers discovered Uranus. That transition means every center in our version got what I’d call an upgrade. You genuinely cannot study the traditional chakra system and assume it maps cleanly onto ours. The head center in Human Design, for example, relates to the pineal gland, while some chakra teachings place that function differently. Where the two extra centers came from is a fair question with more than one answer floating around; my own understanding is that the classical heart center split into what we now separate as the G Center (identity) and the Heart Center (willpower), and the solar plexus differentiated further as our species developed emotional and spirit awareness. Same rough neighborhood, different building.

Kabbalah gives us the shape of connection, not the doctrine

The most common question I get about the fourth influence is where the Judaic Kabbalah shows up, since we don’t teach a class on it directly. What we borrowed is structural: the Tree of Life from the Kabbalah maps ten spheres connected by pathways, a lattice of centers linked to each other. That’s the same basic geometry as our nine centers connected by 36 channels running through 64 gates. We didn’t take any of the spiritual doctrine, the mysticism, or the ceremonial practice attached to Kabbalah. We took the idea that consciousness can be mapped as connected nodes, and built our own wiring diagram on that scaffold.

What actually makes it new

Here’s the piece I want to leave you with, because it’s the part that gets lost when people go looking for Human Design inside older traditions and can’t quite find it: the neutrino stream is what makes this its own system. Ra taught that we are shaped by an ongoing exchange of neutrinos, tiny particles moving through us constantly, carrying imprint from the stars, the planets, and each other. Your sun accounts for a large majority of what imprints you at birth, your design chart adds another layer from months earlier, and none of the four traditions above have any equivalent mechanism. That’s the part nobody handed Ra. He spent twenty years developing strategy and authority into something people could actually experiment with in daily life, well after the initial material came through him. The borrowed pieces gave the system its shape. What he built on top of that shape is what makes it Human Design.
